Hi - does anyone have any particular recommendations for which oil to use post mastectomy on scars once healed? Was going to opt for bio oil but wonder if any specific recommendations?

  • Hi there. I was told by my consultant no need to buy anything fancy, just Aveeno, or similar fragrance free/gentle moisturiser, and bio-oil.

  • Hello,  I  don’t think oils do too much but a scar gel like mederma or anything that is spigot scars should help more than an oil.
if you watch Dr dray on YouTube she has excellent advice on scars and what to do. She is dermatologist so gives sound advice.
Take care. I used mederma for awhile on lumpectomy scars but also just made sure to use a good moisturizer too.
    Hugs to you.

  • Balmonds rosehip scar oil - holland and barrett or Aveeno skin repair oil. I have been advised against bio oil.

  • Thanks so much, that’s really helpful I’ll look her up xx

  • Thanks I’ll check these out too. I have some aveeno moisturiser already in house so will use this while I check out suggestions Pray

  • I had a reaction to Bio Oil. My local hospice provided me with some scar therapy, which was amazing, maybe you could ask at your local one? I learned there that it’s about massaging the scar tissue and just using a nice quality, inexpensive moisturiser x

  • Hi  , I use Palmers cocoa butter skin therapy oil. I’m personally not keen on bio oil as the last time I checked the ingredients, the main one was liquid paraffin. I’m trying to avoid that sort of thing so I try to stick to products with fewer ‘nasties’, but I’m not a medic and this is just my personal opinion! Hope you find one that suits you, love and hugs, HFxx

  • Oh dear! Thanks for the tip but sorry you had to go through something else! I’ll ask thank u, yes, physio also said to me key is massaging area to stop scar tissue restricting xxx

  • Thank u, I think I’m going to avoid bio oil / have looked up the aveeno one with no nasties in it so might look at that - yup, emotions kicking in more now almost 2 weeks on & dressings off Cry I think once I know the lymph nodes biopsy results on Thursday I’ll properly react to mastectomy - right now I’m just so focused on those results Fingers crossed tone1 thank you for your support xx

  • It was really nice tbh, the nurse who did the massage was wonderful, I had 4 x 1hr sessions and it was very therapeutic, we chatted throughout and she helped me mentally as well as physically, I’d recommend anyone to contact their local hospice to see if it’s available to them x
