Hi all,

It's been almost 6 months since diagnosis of stage 1 breast cancer, 2 failed attempts later I've still not got clear margins on DCIS so need a mastectomy, I'm 34 with autism. After everything I've gone through the past few months (first found the lump in july) long story but between myself, the professionals and my family I'm having a single mastectomy without a reconstruction. A lot to process but it's happening on Wednesday so after tips to cope with it.

  • Hi supermeg 90 - so sorry to hear your story xx I’m relatively new here - mixed ductal lobular initially found lump 6 weeks ago but had to have left breast mastectomy on Monday - so very recent! I didn’t get reconstruction, partly due to waiting on sentinel node biopsy results & possibility of further treatment but also I just felt focused on getting (hopefully) all the cancer out - the op was fine and pain has not been too bad at all - I had my first look yesterday when practice nurse changed dressing - I honestly just feel relief that it’s gone and have focused on mastectomy as me taking control and kicking my cancers butt / as I say it’s only been days for me but hope my initial reflections help xxx good luck next week

  • Ps - purely practical advice so far 5 days on - rest and let everyone look after you, stagger visitors, Do the exercises for arm movement as soon as you can, the drain is a bit awkward but hopefully will come out quickly, I use a pillow under my arm to help ease pain & any seroma build up - a friend got me one like this which is great - really comfy ! Good luck xxx

  • Those heart shaped pillows and amazing. I got one given at hospital when I went for my surgery.  A local charity makes them Heart️
