Zometa - 3 or 5 years

Hi everyone

I was diagnosed with TNBC in April 2022 and had a lumpectomy followed by chemotherapy (3 x EC, 12 x paclitaxel) and 10 sessions of radiotherapy. I was then put on Zometa every 6 months for 3 to 5 years.

I'm now coming to the end of 3 years and my original oncologist said that I would be on it for a minimum of 3 years but, that if I tolerated it (which I have), he would extend this to 5 years.

When I had my oncology appointment last year the new oncologist, the original has retired, said that modern thinking was that there was no need to be on Zometa for any longer than 3 years but, if I wanted to, I could stay on it for 5 years.

So my question is, how many years were you told that you would be on it for?

I do like the idea of stopping after 3 years but wondered what others thought.

  • Hi, I'm 4 years in and have been told I am on it for5  years. I’m 55 now, maybe age makes a difference. Best wishes

  • I'm 64, so maybe age does make a difference. I'll be having my next appointment with my oncologist in October so I'll quiz her further before I decide one way or the other.

  • I’m 71 and having 6 Zometa infusions, so 3 years. I’ve got numbers 5 and 6 this July and next January, there’s never been a suggestion of it going on for longer..

I’ve had lump out, 4 EC, 12 paclitaxel, node clearance, 19 radiotherapy and have a year left of abemaciclib, 4 more of letrozole. I’ve been willing  to accept everything offered, but hope nothing more gets suggested or extended. By and large it’s been pretty much tolerable but I used to feel a fair bit better back in March 2023! I get tired!!

  • I'm 47 and have been told I'll be having it for 3 years so not sure it is an age thing! i'll be interested to hear what they say! I'm Her2 positive, grade 3 so as you can imagine I want everything I can for as long as possible if it's going to help....

  • It seems that around 2022-2023 there’s been a change in thinking re the duration of effective treatment with zometa infusions.

I seem to have been a bit ranty last night, but I’m so glad to have been informed about and freely offered such thorough treatment for a small but highly aggressive  proliferative tumour.
    All the best everyone. xx
