Immunotherapy

Hi. Who has had immunotherapy and what type of breast cancer did you have?

I’ve heard immunotherapy is the gold standard of treatment, very effective and less side effects than chemotherapy. I’d like to have it just in general as it is supposed to boost your immune system so your immune system can fight any cancer cells. I’m not sure how long it lasts ie does it still work 10/20 years later or do you need to have it yearly for example.

I tried to push for it but my oncologist said it wasn’t used for her 2 negative which is what I had. When I pushed it and said do I need to go private to get access to it she just said no it doesn’t work for her 2 negative only triple negative. Now I know someone who had it for her 2 positive so is she correct. I do worry about what they tell you as I was also told by my consultant that if you have radiotherapy you can’t have implant reconstruction and I’ve later found out that you can so how do I know what they are saying is true.

Surely everyone who has had cancer should have immunotherapy to prevent recurrence if it is simply boosting your immune system to fight any cancer cells in your body developing over time.

  • Yes your oncologist is correct.  Immunotherapy is used in triple negative and HER2.
There are side effects to immunotherapy so if not appropriate there is no way a reputable doctor would recommend.

I know what you mean about more treatment options for invasive ductal cancer and her2 negative and there are optionss.
    Take care.

  • Thanks so much for replying that is reassuring.

  • Hi, I had immunotherapy for stage three TNBC but had to stop half way through as was hospitalised for five weeks with DRESS syndrome and sepsis still have issues now and see physio but just had surgery and can say I’m officially cancer free Heart

  • I’m so sorry you ended up in hospital for that long how awful, I didn’t realise it could be that bad.

So happy to hear you are cancer free now that is amazing xxx

  • Thanks.. it can be amazing and also awful but it did the job and killed the cancer. Hope everything goes well for you Relaxed️ x

  • Most types of immunotherapy are checkpoint inhibitors. They target something in the cancer that stops the immune system working properly and therefore allow the immune system to see and deal with the cancer. Breast cancer is not all the same, there are multiple different types even beyond the obvious question of whether the cancer has hormone receptors. The immunotherapy drug you are thinking of is Pembrolizumab. It only works on cancer that expresses a high level of the PD/L1 protein. It is relevant to about 40% of TNBC cases. Unfortunately if you don’t have the protein it won’t work for you. Sorry to sound blunt.

  • That’s really informative thank you.
