Abemaciclib and travel

Hi, I’m on cycle 13 of Abemaciclib for primary BC. Unfortunately due to a high temperature Acute Oncology told me to get to A&E while I was away in the UK over Easter. After a day there I was told my neutrophils were normal and given antibiotics for a chest infection - and now having a 2 week break from Abem. I have felt cautious travelling on Abem because of this possible need to get to A&E if I have a temperature. But am feeling really restricted and would love to get a way!  I wondered how others are managing it and if they’ve needed medical assistance away from home due to low neutrophils on the drug? I had an A&E neutropenic sepsis experience just after chemotherapy. I’ve been told that it’s unlikely to be that bad on Abem, but can’t gauge how cautious I need to be - any thoughts?

  • What do you mean cycle 13? Is Abemaciclib a chemotherapy? My notes state I am eligible to this but I presumed it was a tablet like tamoxifen?! As it said endocrine therapy.

  • Abemaciclib is an orally taken targeted therapy taken in monthly cycles (as described by oncologists) You can look it up on the macmillan website.

  • Hi,

I sympathise with you. I am on cycle 19 and due to have a week in Scotland next week. Last year I managed Ireland for 2 weeks and Scotland for a week. I’m due to finish in October and can’t wait to head for the sun next year. I know others go abroad but I haven’t felt confident enough to. We have stayed in holiday lets whilst I’ve been on Abemaciclib. Although I’m trying to live normally with the bowel issues and the increased vulnerability to infection this has been my compromise.
Well done for reaching cycle 13 you are half way through. It sounds as if you will finish next May, I am already planning a holiday to Malta in April and Italy in August. This treatment seems never ending at times but we will get there.

  • I’ve been on Abemaciclib for a year now, not always feeling great but still on the 150mg dose.

I found the chemotherapy tough but did go away during it in 2023 for 2 short trips abroad booked before I had been diagnosed. I didn’t have any sepsis during the chemo, neutrophils went up when I had the filgrastim injections after the E/C doses and the main problem with the 12 paclitaxel infusions were toes, nails and and skin related.

I’ve judged myself “low risk” for complications from the abemaciclib and so last year went away to Spain and Greece for 1 week and 2 weeks respectively.
I’ve not had a good winter with 2 spells of long term coughs, uti’s and various things, but on 3 occasions have stopped the pills for a few days on instruction and restarted when I’ve been better.

Anyway we’re planning to go away to Northern Greece and Istanbul in June for 18 days. I’ve always wanted to visit Istanbul and hope that it’s all ok for the people there, what with the political disturbances and more recently the earthquake.

So the answer is I’ve not had a problem with the abemaciclib beyond feeling a bit run down at times and I do feel ok about travelling. I’m more wary of coming to physical harm if I bump or cut myself as I take a blood thinner with the abemaciclib and still use a portacath for zoledronic acid infusions.

Hope this is helpful to you Newbuds. xx

  • Thank you Shade, that’s really helpful to hear your experience. I hope you enjoy Scotland next week and Malta and Italy at the end of the 2 years. It does feel never ending at times, but it it also feels important to balance with enjoying life too, and there’s lots to enjoy in Ireland and Scotland..

  • Thank you Cynoptimistic, it’s really helpful to hear your experiences. I’m sorry you’ve not had a good winter with infections. You must be really looking forward to your time away in June, I hope you have a great time and stay healthy throughout.
