Hi all, I'm new on here. Diagnosed 11 Nov and am booked into surgery 27th January for a single mastectomy. I feel I haven't been given much information about what to expect.
My question is: what is your experience with recovery post surgery. I don't get sick pay, so am hoping to get back to work as soon as possible. I'm using my holidays for the first 2 week's. Would it be unreasonable to expect myself to work from home, maybe on a part time basis after that. I know we are all different and recovery times will differ, but your experience would help me get an understanding. Thank you.
I had a single mastectomy but also a diep flap reconstruction at the same time and it has taken me 6 weeks to start to feel almost normal. Saying that, the biggest issue for me is the abdominal wound so if you're having just a mastectomy it will definitely be easier than what I had. One area of my mastectomy still has not healed completely and this is the first week I have not had a hospital appointment to attend for dressings checks. I would not plan to do anything for at least 2 weeks so you have time to physically and emotionally come to terms with the operation. You won't know how your body is reacting until it happens. I had a drain in my breast for 2 days post op and then had it removed but I know others who have had multiple drains that they had to go home with and look after for more than a week.
Whatever you choose do not push yourself too hard, it slows your recovery down.
Please reach out and accept help if you need it.
Good luck on the 27th.

Hi I had a single mastectomy on 13th Dec and was told 6:8 weeks off work first 2/3 weeks were hard did not feel like doing much , hopefully you’ll be ok as working from home. My journey is now a bit different and I’ve to have chemo so work will be out of question for a while longer as I work with the public I’ve been told I Won’t get back in case of infection hope all goes well with you I did get all the info I needed when I met with my surgeon a few weeks before my op . Take Care x
Thank You. I also work with public, but work have kindly said they will find me some work I can do from home. I have decided to give myself a month to recover from surgery and hope my consultant will agree to give me a 'adapted fit note', so work will allow me to do some work and get some money in. I will also need chemo, which is more of the unknown. Your reply has been very useful, Thank you.
Good luck on your journey x
