I've just started my hormone treatment Anastrozole and have heard horror stories about the side effects, I know it's going to be different for everyone but I'm actually waiting for the effects to happen, I guess I'm hoping for reactions from the community to tell me lots of positive things or just a reassurance that if I do get reactions they will get better with time (only started yesterday) .

  • I have been taking Anastozole for about 6 months now and can say I have not experienced any side effects. I do tire easily whether that is a side effect of the tablet or part of the normal recovery from cancer, I don't know.

Hope this gives you some reassurance.

  • That is reassuring thank you for replying .Blush

  • Hello Moly,  I have been on anastrazole for just over 2 1/2 years and doing well..  I do have some side effects but they are manageable.  Dry mouth at night, hot flashes, hair thinner, muscle aches.  My skin has become much drier too so always moisturize.  My weight has not changed.  I remember when I first started taking it I was just waiting to feel awful but it didn’t happen so thankful for that.  Since there are 2 other aromatase inhibitors you can always try another one if you get too many serious side effects.  Take care.

  • I'm will be starting radiotherapy in a few weeks ,a little nervous about after effects and tiredness any tips ?I'm having 10 sessions thank you so much for taking the time in messaging me Barbara x

  • Radiotherapy was ok for me. I did it after work -20 sessions- and had no issues. I know I was lucky but well… hopefully you will be too.

  • Ohh well done that's really good!

  • Hi Moly,  actually going for radiation was a big decision for me as I was concerned about immediate but also latent side effects.  But my surgeon and radiation oncologist explained to me the benefits too so I finally decided to do it.  Another thing for me was that I had to have it to both breasts.  Well enough about that.  I had 16 treatments to both and a boost of 5 extra to the right.  My skin is very sensitive and I am fair skinned so was very concerned about burn etc.  I started using moisturizer about a week prior to starting radiation as I wanted my skin barrier to be in great condition.  I also made sure that I had kept up my strength by doing my exercises as radiation oncologist told me only walking during radiation no other exercise.  I tried to keep up good sleeping and eating habits.  My skin really did great and only got a little pink no redness.  My nipples were sore for about the first week of radiation but then got better.  Did have occasional itching but hydrocortisone took care of it right away.  When I showered I did not face the shower so the water went down my back and didn’t pound on my chest.  No washcloth either just gentle washing with hands and pat dry, no rubbing.  No soap either and needs to be fragrance free.  I used Avene gentle cleanser but they don’t make that one anymore.  Used Avene Cicalfate restorative cream to moisturize and also used the Avene thermal spring spray if needed.  Well I think that is most of it.  I did not get fatigued so feel blessed.

I also started breast massage 3 weeks after my radiation was done.  Radiation oncologist said ok.  If you want I can send you the video on how to do it.  Did it daily for over a year and still do it as needed.

Hope I don’t have too many typos and take care of yourself.

  • Hi Barbara such great tips ,I'm having one breast done and they had to remove my nipple as I had two lumps one directly behind it,never thought about the shower so thank you, I would like the video please, and any hydrocortisone cream ? I am moisturising..hope I'm not so tired I do miss work. Its so lovely talking about it with people that have gone through this the advice is priceless.
