Surgery just before Christmas

Hi everyone

I got my last biopsy result yesterday and now know that my cancer is Oestrogen positive and HER2 negative. I'm booked for surgery to remove the lesions from my right breast and my axillary lymph nodes on  the 19th December as a day patient  and I'm wondering whether I should cancel my plans to visit family on Christmas Day or will I feel well enough to travel a short distance by car? I can just sit and relax once there, probably the only time I'll get away with being lazy on Christmas day so I intend to make  the most of it.

I know everyone reacts and recovers differently but I would welcome any thoughts?

  • 100% do it. It’ll be just what you need. But have a polite exit plan in place so that you can slip away when you are “done”!!

Thank you for your advice Heart

The post-op paperwork was talking about not driving until earliest 48 hours after op, but I did check with my insurance company that stipulated that they go on the medical recommendation - plus I have to be able to perform an emergency stop, be able to steer, use the gears (unless automatic) and otherwise able to control your car safely. I also have to take into consideration any pain medication that would prohibit me from driving.

Seems like it depends on which insurance company you are with - I will double check with my care team though when going in next week, but really hope I can drive by end next week... not in any pain or on pain medication ... LOL and are  getting cabin fever as not much in walking distance from where I live.Stuck out tongue winking eye

  • I think I drove a couple of weeks after my op. I was basically fine
although tbf I did drive out of a petrol station without paying for my fuel!! Oops

  • Enjoy your time with family looking after you. I had surgery Monday 24th June, Tuesday I went with hubby shopping, he went in 2 shops I only did the one, I stayed in the car for the 2nd one. Wednesday I was walking on the beach with hubby and the dog. Just getting outside and walking around helps.

  • I think you’ll be fine, with someone else driving, but may be more tried than usual. I had my mastectomy and sentinel node removal on Tuesday, have been out walking locally every day since (very slowly initially), had dinner in the pub 2 minutes walk from our house on Friday and went to the cinema (25 minutes walk each way) last night. Did spend 3 hours at urgent care yesterday due to a possible infection next to the wound. Hopefully the people you will visit will understand that plans might need to change at short notice depending on how you’re doing.

    • Hi there

I am having my mastectomy Thurs morning I am really nervous but it's mainly the unknown and how I will feel looking down afterwards. I don't know what my next treatment plan will be until they have looked at the nodes they are taking out.

I am happy that you have managed to get out and about so soon after surgery I hope you have a continued recovery x

  • Good luck for your surgery! I feel fine looking at my scar, and when clothed and using the softie from the hospital no one would know I had had a mastectomy (appreciate it would be more obvious in summer wear). I am looking forward to the wound healing and the swelling going down. I am doing the post op arm/shoulder exercises from the leaflet provided by the hospital and they are going well. Like you, the next steps will depend on what they have found through the surgery. My recovery is still going well and I hope yours will too.

  • Hi I'm glad it's all going well, did they say how long you will have to wait for your results?

  • Yes my daughter was just very tired I encouraged her to go for short walks which she said cleared her head made her feel more alert

  • I have an appointment 2 weeks and 2 days after the op but have been warned that if they don’t have the results by the day before the appointment it will be put back a week I think. I had to follow up with the hospital to get the date so my husband can rearrange his work to be with me. I imagine if the results were still outstanding it would be put back again. Currently I am due back at work at the start of January so am keen to know next steps before then.
