Dear All, I have had my mammograms, ultrasounds and biopsies and they have already told me to prepare for a cancer diagnosis so my head has been all over the place the past few weeks. I have been told I should get a call tomorrow to book me into the clinic. I have so many questions as I am finding it all very confusing.
Please can I ask this lovely community the following:
From diagnosis how soon did you have to wait for surgery?
I have decided I will opt for a double mastectomy if this is advised despite it looking like cancer in one breast, did many of you opt for this too?
If you are having chemo has that got to happen before surgery?
Sorry to bombard you with questions, I am so grateful I have come across this lovely community. Sending love and healing hugs to you all xxx
Waiting for results and to find out what the treatment is going to be is a horrible time.
From my appointment with the breast surgeon, when it was confirmed that the biopsies showed cancer, it was 25 days to surgery.
I had a lumpectomy as the surgeon was confident she could remove it all without having to resort to a mastectomy. I don't know if I could have chosen to have a double mastectomy if I'd wanted one, which I didn't, but I was happy to be guided by my team.
I didn't have chemotherapy before hand but did afterwards as a very small amount of cancer cells were detected in one of the sentinel lymph nodes I had removed.
((hugs)) back
Hi Sparkleandshine
Welcome to the forum and I am sorry to hear that you are facing a breast cancer diagnosis.
The wait for surgery and whether you have chemo first depends on the size and type of breast cancer that you may have.
Most surgeons don't advise a double mastectomy as they don't like to get rid of good tissue as it's a more invasive surgery than a lumpectomy and has a longer recovery time.
Wishing you the best of luck with your results and if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask them. All of us on this forum are here to help.
Best wishes

Hi Sparkleandshine (lovely name!)
Sorry you have to be here, but welcome! I was 7 weeks from diagnosis to lumpectomy. Surgery was scheduled but MRI identified something else so more tests were needed. It was then cancelled a second time (I’d had the pre-op and everything) as there was disagreement about the plan at MDT and a second opinion was sought. I wanted to share this so that you are aware that things can change along the way, so try to be prepared for that possibility. Although it was horrible at the time and I just wanted something, anything, to be done, with the benefit of hindsight I am now grateful that my team were so thorough as it meant I had the right surgery and best possible outcomes.
Feel free to bombard with as many questions as you like, that’s what we are here for! Sending love and best of luck with everything. x
