I had a mastectomy two years ago, lobular cancer. Had 6 months of chemo followed by radiotherapy and now on Anastrazole and Abemaciclib. Have recently notic d a swelling on my chest the same side as breast cancer. I am terrified it has spread to my chest wall and know I should self refer to my bc team but am too terrified to find out! Can’t bear the thought of it returning as was just turning a corner and looking forward to the future. Please tell me it could be something else!
I found a 3cm lump just under my mastectomy scar at top of ribs. Phoned BC nurses and they arranged a follow up in clinic a week later. Examination and scans showed it was a lipoma (fatty lump). The earlier you get reviewed the better it will be for you and put your mind at ease x
Hi there, it's so scary when you find something, but I really recommend you get it checked. Swelling could be lymphoedema, which can be a late side effect of radiotherapy. I have this, I have general swelling and I've been shown massage techniques to ease it. Difficult as it is, I always prefer to know. Best wishes
I found this interesting as I have swelling under my mastectomy scar which I think has developed gradually since my mastectomy in 2024. It is about a 2.5 inches x 1 inch oval. It is soft but when pressed pressed tender in parts. I had a double mastectomy, no reconstruction and this was the unaffected side. I previously showed it to my GP and more recently to my consultant oncologist but both dismissed it without any examination. I remain uneasy but presume the oncologist must know. I was seeing him about aromatase inhibitors and brought this up during my appointment. He looked but didn't examine or feel it.
There is always a lurking doubt after breast cancer. Prior to my getting it I thought it was something that didn't happen in our family!!! But now its always lurking at the back of my mind. When you've no breasts there is no annual check so there is nothing to give reassurance. Best wishes to everyone reading this chain x
