Hi everyone
i had left side mastectomy and sentinel lymph nodes removed 6 days ago. I was out of hospital the same day and I’m recovering well. No significant pain, Just discomfort which can be well managed with ibuprofen and paracetamol. I’m lucky to have my partner and mum taking care of me and helping me wash my hair etc.
the surgery was the first step in my treatment, so it feels like a big hurdle, and I was actually in a pretty good frame of mind leading up to it (looking forward to it, almost!) as during the wait all I could think about were it spreading and migrating further into my lymph’s and beyond.
now the surgery is over the anxiety about the ‘results’ appointment is kicking. I go back in 9 days to hear whether they got clear margins or not. They said more of the lymph nodes looked suspicious during surgery than they had picked up on the other scans.
im also anxious about mets. I had a Pet CT because CT showed a couple of areas in my lung and an 8mm area on my vertebra. The Pet reassured them but I’m still so anxious. I’ve requested my next CT to be before Xmas. Also I’m not sure why I didn’t get a bone scan, given the area on the vertebra- has anyone else had experience with the criteria for a bone scan?
I’m sorry to read you are anxious and worrying about getting results
I know it’s hard but I’d concentrate on getting well after surgery and wait for the meeting when I’m sure they will be open and transparent with their findings
I know I’m not being helpful but please don’t worry so much I know it’s easier said than done
Hi. I also had left side mastectomy last week and like you am currently going through the wait for the “results”. I had a sentinel node biopsy before my surgery, which came back clear. I also had a host of scans right at the start of this journey - MRI, CT, PET-CT, and full bone scan. I have learnt to put trust in the medical teams and as hard as it is, try not to think about the “what ifs” or wonder why things are/aren’t being done. Focus on each day and recovering from the surgery, then take the next step when it arrives. X
Thanks BlueGiraffe1 I hope you are recovering well after the surgery. It hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would be in terms of pain. Just awkward and sore. How are you getting on?
My recovery is sounding very similar to yours - surprised by the lack of pain and just awkward to do things. Especially with the chest drain! The compression bra is uncomfortable, but that’s about as bad as it’s got so far. Glad to hear you have good support at home to help with things as well - it makes a big difference doesn’t it.
I’m glad to hear! The drain is the worst bit I agree!
Hi. Just thought I’d check in to see how you are getting on? I had my follow up yesterday - they were pleased with how everything is healing and removed the chest drain. Just have to wait for the Oncatype results now to know what will happen next, but that appointment isn’t for another couple of weeks. So back to more rest and recovery for me! Hope you’re doing well. x
Thanks for checking in BlueGiraffe1
im glad your follow up went well. Was it painful when they removed the drain? Not looking forward to that! I have two more days to wait before I go back for dressing removal and surgery ‘results’. They haven’t mentioned if I’ll have oncotype testing or not. In fact they haven’t told me much at all about what will happen/what I’ll find out next!
Hope your recovery continues to go well. If you work, have you managed to go back to work yet?
Hi sorry to jump on in your thread.
I had a Lumpectomy and full nose clearance 13 days ago. I’ve had an MRI but no other scans? I’m too waiting on results to see if they got clear margins. If not I’ll be having a Masectomy as the lump was quite large in comparison to the size of my breast. I didn’t have any drains but seem to be getting swelling - like an egg in my armpit. They’re not going to drain it yet unless it gets bigger, but I’m getting problems with cording already. Have you had anything like that yet? I’ve been doing the exercises but they feel quite painful when doing the hands up the wall ones. I’ve been advised to dose up on painkillers and to preserve with the exercises.
hope you get your results soon xxx
Hey. The removal of the chest drain did hurt, but only briefly. They basically just cut the stitch and yanked it out. So with a deep breath you’ll be fine on that one!
I know what you mean about the not saying much, but I’m sure we will get the information we need when they have it. I guess they probably don’t want to give all the different scenarios and have us worrying about it. Hope your follow-up goes well though.
I’m not back at work yet - the consultant gave me a note for 4 weeks off from the surgery, but my work have been amazing and said there’s no need to rush back and aren’t expecting me to return until the new year. I guess much of this will depend on the outcome of the oncatype score and what the next stages of treatment will be as well. So I’m just making the most of the time off by looking after me and doing all the jobs that come with this time of year!
Hope you are doing well. x
Hi. Hope you are doing well. I only had 3 (I think) lymph nodes removed and this was done just over 2 weeks before my surgery. I did get some swelling in my armpit which has since disappeared - they said it was just fluid build up, which is perfectly normal after that procedure. I have read that the exercises really help with recovery and I know they did with mine. I had a mastectomy and reconstruction. Hope you get the results soon and you can move on with the journey. x
