Breast pain six months after surgery

Just over six months ago I had lumpectomy on the left and right sides plus lymph gland removal. That was followed by radiotherapy, a zometa infusion and letrozole

I expected pain and discomfort but I hadn’t anticipated it would last so long. The pain is slightly different from the immediate post op discomfort. I have tenderness and what feels like bruising with occasional sharp pains.

Have any of you experienced that please?

  • Hi, I'm 7 months post lumpectomy and SNB.

I would get it checked for edema ( lymphoedema of the breast). I have had it.

Also, radiotherapy pains can continue for years . I had a few stabbing pains yesterday . It's the gift that gives for years

    :(.

Contact your BCN to get it checked x

    Thanks.

ironically I had no pain/discomfort during or immediately after the radiotherapy.

I have a telephone appointment with my oncologist later this week so I’ll speak to him about it.

i hope your pain disappears soon.
    good luck

  • Thanks that's really useful only 3 weeks post lumpectomy no one told me how long the pains continue

  • Hi, I developed similar symptoms a few months after my surgery/ radiotherapy. It wasn’t in my treated breast but just above, what i would call my chest. Like you, I describe it as tenderness which is sore to touch. My surgeon examined me & sent me for a nuclear whole body bone scan which thankfully was negative for any bone cancer. My assumption is that it’s post radiotherapy pain. It is right over the area that was radiated, including under my arm. It’s still there but I’m no longer worried about it.
Incidently, the bone scan reported that my rheumatoid arthritis was more widespread than I originally thought so my rh team has been copied in on the report. So 2 birds with 1 stone.

  • Thanks. Every bit of info re ongoing pain reassures me, although obviously I’m sorry for those who suffer

I've now spoken to my oncology consultant and specialist physio. Both were inclined to think the pain was linked to my radiotherapy treatment.

  • Hi  , always wise to have it checked but I’m another with ongoing tenderness in the treated breast. I’m pretty sure it’s the radiotherapy in my case as it’s well away from the actual op area. It’s not painful if left alone but any gentle proddings eg for self examination, and it’s definitely very tender. My rads were nearly 6 years ago! I take paracetamol before mammograms. And I remember the sharp pains post rads. I don’t get them anymore. Love and hugs, HFxx
