Has anyone decided to decline having Kadcyla?

Having had 7 rounds of chemo and a mastectomy and been told i was all clear this was a bolt from the blue!

I had never heard of this treatment let alone any suggestion i would need more chemo , i'm still in shock.

It doesn't sound as though Kadcyla is without many drawbacks and risks, my gut feeling is to decline and take my chances.

I'd be really interested to hear anyone else's thoughts.

Thanks.

  • Hi JOANY

Sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with breast cancer.  While I don't have an answer for you I noticed that you haven't had any replies yet so I thought I'd reply to you as this is a very busy forum and your question had moved down to the second page.  This reply will move you to the top of the discussion.  Hopefully someone will be along shortly with an answer for you.

    Best wishes

  • I’ve had 10 cycles of Kadcyla, and have 4 more to go. I was advised that it would give me the best chance of preventing cancer coming back after, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery for oestrogen positive breast cancer.
It’s not nearly as bad as the previous chemotherapy, as it’s more targeted. Mine is an infusion every 3 weeks, and apart from horrible mouth ulcers which seem to pop up with every cycle, and feeling a bit tired for the first couple of days, it’s really ok.
I do get some joint pain, but that could also be from taking letrazole.

I hope you get some positive responses, you can always try it and see how you get on with it, hopefully you will be fine too

  • I was also told I needed 14 rounds of Kadcyla after chemo, surgery and radiotherapy.  It came as a shock as I thought I was nearing the end of treatment.  The nurse who was also in the room whilst I was getting results from the breast surgeon told me  I didn’t have to accept it, but on consideration I figured they would not be offering this expensive treatment if it would not be beneficial.  I finished the treatment in December 2023 and it was not nearly as bad as I feared, I had no noticeable side effects so was very lucky.  I would definitely start treatment and see how you get on.  Of course, the decision is yours and I wish you all the best what ever you decide to do.
