New diagnosis- what does this mean?

After having DCIS and LCIS last year and receiving the all clear I am shocked to find it has returned so soon in the same breast. My new diagnosis is IDC plus low to intermediate grade DCIS. I am having another lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy.

However my treatment plan received today states:

Hormones: Oestrogen positive, Progesterone negative

Does anyone know what this means?

Thank you

  • I just think it means that the oestrogen in your body feeds the cancer. They will likely offer you oestrogen blockers such as Letrazol or similar to help reduce oestrogen production. I hope all goes well. I too am on oestrogen blockers after two surgeries and coming to terms with the effects thet can have. I hear from people on here that tgere are different oestrogen blockers. Sending love

I am already on Letrozole from last year but with this Progesterone negative I really don't know what this means, it was not mentioned when I met with the Consultant so I  don't understand the implications

I will have to phone my BCN

    Thank you again x

  • Not a lot is mentioned about the role progesterone plays in cancer. Oestrogen ( or Estrogen in USA ) is a female hormone which plays a part in menstruation & pregnancy. Oestrogen is the main hormone in hormone related cancers. Mine was reported as 99% Oestrogen positive and 5% progesterone positive. But hormone blockers ( Letrozole is one) blocks Oestrogen. I suppose that not everyone responds entirely to these medications but I would certainly speak to your BCN as they can advise you on whether to remain on it or change to a different one.
