Seroma

I had a lumpectomy nearly 3 weeks ago now and developed a seroma after about 9 days. The breast care nurses have told me not to worry as this can happen but the fluid literally seems like it is pouring out of my wound and just doesn't seem to be getting any better. I had a slight reprieve for a couple of days as I went in for a lymph node clearance a few days ago and the fluid must have been drained then but it's now back with a vengeance! Has anybody had this and can tell me how long it lasted for?? I'm starting to worry it will delay my chemo starting.

Thanks so much!

  • Hi LauraPts

Yes, I had this! 3.5 weeks after my lumpectomy I sat down watching telly one evening and realised my jumper was wet and there was loads of fluid coming out (sorry, I know that sounds gross!). Bit of a surprise as I hadn’t had any issues post surgery until then and had thought the wound was healed up. I went to MIU as it was a Bank Holiday weekend so no BCNs and the nurses there bandaged me up and I was sent to see the on call surgeon in A&E the next day. I was given antibiotics and then seen by my surgeon a couple of days later who drained it with a syringe. I hadn’t realised how much fluid there had been as I immediately felt more comfortable after this was done even though I hadn’t been feeling particularly uncomfortable (if that makes sense?!). After that no further problems. x

  • Thanks Eeebee! My breast cancer nurse is saying they don't tend to drain it anymore due to risk of infection but right now it feels like that might be the only way to make this stop! I am literally having to change dressings every day, it really is gross! Going to go up clinic again on Monday and see what they say this time!
