Breast pain/discomfort

Hi.

I had a lumpectomy in December 2021 with a re-excision a month later in January 2022, followed by EC chemo, radiotherapy and then started 10 years of endocrine therapy with 3 years of bisphosphonates.

I'm now almost 3 years from the surgery and the end of active treatment was 2yrs ago. However my breast is still extremely tender and I occasionally get a sharp stabbing pain in it. It's not as bad as the first 6 months but I didn't expect to still have pain at this stage. I really expected everything to be healed and comfortable by now

Having had 2 of the annual Mammograms which were both clear, its obviously nothing nasty, but.... does anyone else still have post surgical pain this far along? Is this normail or am I just lucky?

Thanks

  • Hi

After my lumpectomy a few months ago I had stabbing pains through my nipple. Oh my golly, the pain was so bad. My surgeon prescribed Amitriptyline (10mg) one a day. She said it was neuropathic pain.

With me the pain stopped after a short time. I know I am not as far ahead as you but maybe see if they can give you something like I had ?

    Big hugs xx

  • Thanks blueskythinking,

I will ask my doc about it. My stabbing pains are occasional although they can be quite sharp and painful, but as they are infrequent I have just put up with it.

It's more the tenderness around the surgical area that gets to me most. It is really uncomfortable to do my self examinations, or to pick up a wriggly grand baby as each all knock is really uncomfortable. I will chat to the doctor as I thought the tenderness would have gone after 3years.

All the best for your onward journey. X

  • Oh goodness, I’m just going through this now. 8 months post lumpectomy ( had a large Haematoma post surgery) 6 months post radio. 4 weeks ago I developed a sore, tender area with frequent stabbing pains. I got so worried that my BCN has arranged an appointment with my breast surgeon later this week. But maybe I’m a little relieved that this seems to be common. It’s also coincided with a massive increase in joint pains. I do have Rh arthritis and I had to discontinue my biologic injections until I’ve been cancer free for 5 years. So not sure whether this is causing the joint pains or it’s the Exemestane I’m on. But right now, I’m not feeling too well. I hope I get the all clear on Thursday & a new pain management plan from my Rheumatologist next week. I thought receiving a cancer diagnosis was the worst thing, but it seems the fallout continues. Cancer really is the gift that keeps on giving.
