Aches and Pains Still

I had a lumpectomy last September, and 15 radiotherapy sessions at tge end of November/December. I suffered serious fatigue for 6 months and now I feel aches and pains around my rib cage and shoulder blades. It's not all the time, but the shoulders hurt particularly when I have done physical exercise. I am on Letrozole. Has anybody else suffered with aches and pains post treatment and is it just the Letrozole causing the problems?

  • Hi SusiQ.

Thanks for your post.  Sorry about your aches and pains.

I think Letrozole can cause aches and pains and fatigue. Also, as you had radiotherapy,  that can also cause aches and stiffness later. Have you spoken with your Dr/Oncologist about this?

I have been taking Letrozole  since December. I have experienced quite debilitating severe joint pains, fatigue and low mood with it. I also have an achy and stiff shoulder from radiotherapy.

After discussion with my oncologist,  I'm currently on a break from Letrozole after which I will move to Anastrozole. I've also had scans to rule out metastasis.  I'm looking at diet and nutrition to support my bones whilst taking  aromatose inhibitors. I'm only six months into my 5yrs!

I would ask for a review with your oncologist to explore your options.

I'm not sure of your location but if you're able to get to London. Future Dreams offer some really useful workshops, classes and therapies.

I hope that you get some relief soon.

    Hugs, Shaka

  • Hi, I had a lumpectomy in October and another in January, then a week of radiation. I'm on Letrozole and suffering with dreadful pain- I feel like an old woman!! My joints are stiff when iI sit for a while, I have dreadful lower back pain and my hips hurt?! It's all worse at night - struggle to get comfortable and takes ages to sleep. I have to take paracetemal every night in order to get rid of the pain enough to sleep.  I feel really fed up with it but too scared to come off the Letrozole so hoping it eases with time. Hope you feel better soon.

  • It must be the letrozole. When my shoulder blades start paining I have to sit down because it knocks me that sick. I'm fine once I sit down but it's awful. I don't take painkillers, more fool me, but I don't want to rely on them. Apparently changing brand can help, but you may have to try a few before finding a 'good' one. I'm not sure I can be bothered with the hassle. I hope your aches and pains settle down. Good luck

  • Thanks for your reply. I don't like relying on pain relief but sleep is so important to me becausexI have Fibromyalgia.  If I don't take it the pain in my lower back is excruciating and I can't sleep. I have explored different brands- on the 3rd one now but it doesn't seem to make much difference unfortunately! I keep telling myself its better than Cancer!

  • Hi there , i was on Letrazole and had the worst shoulder and pain in my arms ever. I tried lots of different medication pain and anti inflammatory nothing worked . I was having restless nights as every time i rolled onto my shoulders the pain woke me up. I took Letrazole for 8 months and ended up going back to see my breast surgeon who changed me to Exemestane and i feel like a different woman. I am now doing my body combat classes again which i love and there is hardly any pain. I got to the point where i couldnt even do my bra up. Ive also started doing pilates and having acupuncture which has worked wonders too.

  • Wow. Thank you for that. The pains I get in my shoulder blades are nauseating and sometimes in the top of my arms. I am seeing my surgeon in a few weeks, so I do think I will bring it up then. Thank you for sharing your experience. It feels  good to know it's not just me.
