6 week wait for surgery

I found a lump in my left breast and saw the Dr on 3rd July who referred me to the breast clinic. Breast Clinic appointment was on 18th July and had mammogram, ultrasound and core biopsy. I was told that they thought it was cancer.  Had my results on 1st August and stage 1, grade 2, ER/PR 8 cancer was confirmed.  HER2 was inconclusive so had been sent for FISH test.  Had a stereo mammo biopsy on 2nd August to check microcalcifcations. Had a results appointment on 15th August and microcalcifications were benign and it is HER2 negative.  My lumpectomy has been booked for 23rd September which seems a long time to wait, although I have been prescribed Tamoxifen to take whilst I wait for surgery.  The surgery seems like a long long wait, has anyone else waited almost 6 weeks?

  • Hi

Yes I had to wait 7 weeks for surgery for a lumpectomy. This was the time gap between end of chemotherapy and surgery and it felt like a long wait. As I had no Breast Cancer Nurse contact it was a long wait .

Hope you get what you need soon.

    Hugs x

  • Hi,

Yes, 10 weeks between mammogram and lumpectomy operation. Then another operation 4 weeks after that to clear final bits of margins.

Delays caused by strike action and getting covid (they wanted 4 clear weeks from the infection.)

But, all along, the consultant assured me that the delays would cause me no harm.

Since had two annual clear mammograms.

It's difficult, but you do have to trust the Hospital.

    Good luck.

  • Seven weeks here as my op was cancelled twice. It was horrible waiting but got there in the end! It’s natural to worry about spread during that time, I think everyone does, but the doctors would not do anything to put you at risk of any further harm. Please try and trust the process. Good luck with everything. x
