I’ve been diagnosed with a hormone positive invasive lobular cancer and was told to stop HRT, which I did. However I now feel absolutely awful with menopause symptoms (the reason I started HRT in the first place). I came across an interview with Kirsty Lang who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 50s. She decided to go back onto HRT and was advised that this was okay as long as she was taking tamoxifen at the same time, as it blocks the effects of estrogen on breast tissue. I wanted to ask if there’s anyone here who’s done the same? If so, how has it been for you? Does HRT alleviate the side effects of tamoxifen? Or does tamoxifen stop the HRT working? I’d be very interested to hear any relevant experiences.
Hi, I'm in letrozole rather than tamoxifen and my oncologist isn't even happy about me taking soy milk as it contains isoflavins which are a form of plant estrogen, which is different to human estrogen. It's interesting as there is some new research that soys plant estrogen are ok to take, but my oncologist feels very strongly the research isn't robust enough. (Note, the reason for me wanting to take soy is the letrozole has increased my cholesterol and soy can reduce cholesterol)
So, I'd really recommend following the advice of your oncologist but I would imagine that HRT is a big “no no” given the risks. The string of side effects to medication is never ending and frustrating, I empathise with you. Best wishes
I too was diagnosed with invasive lobular cancer, oestrogen positive, 3years ago. I had a right side mastectomy, and prescribed tamoxifen for 10 years. It took me 2 years, but finally persuaded the oncologist and menopause specialist that I needed HRT. They are both still totally against it, but I have been taking Oestrogel & Progesterone for 6 months. The first 2 months were amazing, hot flushes, joint aches, muscle aches brain fog etc.. all disappeared and I felt like the old me again. Then I noticed the muscle & joint aches, then brain fog has returned, so I'm not sure if its the tamoxifen stopping it from working or whether I need to up my dose. Unfortunately, it takes 6 months to get an appointment, so just waiting on that, which is in a few of weeks to see what they say. I have also tried testosterone, as my libido was non existent, but had to stop that as it increased my testosterone levels by too much. I would still like to see if I can try it again but a smaller dose as I feel that really made a difference to my cognitive function & joint aches. (not the libido, unfortunately, but maybe it was because it was too much) Sorry that doesn't really answer your question, but just thought i'd let you know there are some of us out here on HRT. If you haven't read it already, Avrum Bluming's book Oestrogen matters (which i bought a copy for my oncologist) is a 'must read' Also The History and Mystery of Breast Cancer (kindle only available) by Professor Michael Baum is very Interesting too.
Hello, I have no personal experience but if you watch Dani Binnington’s podcasts on YouTube Menopause and Cancer she has a series of I think 5 days with specialists that discuss pros and cons. I really enjoyed it.
I know that you can use vaginal estrogen cream while on Tamoxifen but I think systemic HRT does not have enough studies so some Doctors are prescribing it but it needs to be a shared decision as there are risks that need to be considered. Vaginal estrogen cream won’t help with your other symptoms only the gentourinsry symptoms of menopause..
That is about all I can share.
Barbara
