Aromatase inhibitors and stopping abemaciclib

Hi

I've been on anastrozole and abemaciclib for just over 2 years. I found the anastrozole gave me joint pains at first but after starting the abemaciclib they have been manageable ( I assume it has some anti inflammatory properties).  I  have been on a reduced dose of abemaciclib for a couple of months (due to headaches) and have now finished the 2 years so stopped it. My joint pains have returned.

Does anyone have advice about using a different aromatase inhibitors which is not so bad for joint pains ?

Thanks

  • Hello Bobbiboo,  I know what you mean about joint pains from Anastrazole.  Mine seem to be muscle aches too.  Have been on Anastrazole for 27 months and was doing ok but seems aches are getting worse.  Right now I am taking mobic an anti inflammatory for 10 days as I was having a flare up.  I don’t like to take them but needed a break from the aches.  I see my medical oncologist in September and I am going to discuss my situation.  She may suggest a break or try either letrozole or exemestane.  She told me last visit that sometimes a different AI can help.
I still exercise daily and do my stretches too but I miss my estrogen.
I hope you find relief.  I have about 3 more years to go on the AI’s.

  • Hi, I've just finished 24 cycles of abemaciclib, I've taken anastrozole along side.

The joint pain & stiffness has reached a bad stage, my oncologist has changed me to exemestance to see if that helps. They all have the same side effects but she says a change can sometimes just help. A week in so too early to tell.

It's not easy with the extreme hot flushes too. I've started everything primrose too, again too early to know if it will help

Hope you find something that helps

    Best wishes x
