Radiologist gives the results away or?

Hi,

Short intro, first noticed things in 2014 resulting in mammogram. Dr was so patronising as nothing showed up and told me to rub in some evening primrose oil in. 2016 then lobular bc (doesn’t show up on mammo) quite big tumour and most nodes affected. Chemo, radio, oophie  and hormone tablets followed. Fast forward to now. I have been having neck aches since Xmas. Tried different pillows etc but still neck ache. Kept thinking not that painful, just like slept in a funny position. Go to gp in  April. (managed to get through brutal receptionist eventually who kept dismissing me). Lovely gp, mri straight away.
But after the mri I asked about results. Both the radiologists assumed that I had not been referred by a gp. When I said I was they were shocked. So I am thinking if they think it wasn’t a gp that referred me then surely it was an oncologist or a specialist that they would be thinking. Who else? And if they think it was an oncologist or specialist then it is because they have seen something on the scan. If they saw  nothing then they might think gp.
Crazy thing is I can’t get this out of my mind, and my pains are getting worse, down my back now and my arms!!
I am convinced my cancer is back and is secondary ( and yes I know there is a secondary group, don’t want to join till it is confirmed) . Dunno, just wondering if anyone had any opinions. I will not be disappointed if there are not many responses as I know from experience that this group does mainly support people going through a primary dx, tbh this group was my lifeline in 2017 ( was there at the birth of the awake thread) . I just wanted to get this out. I feel like I don’t want to worry my family and I am dealing with it all myself.
Any opinions?

  • Hi Wombat.23 welcome to the forum and I am sorry to hear how worried that you are. However, with the history you have and the issues you have experienced its not at all surprising that you are feeling as you are. Im not sure why they sounded surprised except to say that here where i live in Scotland a GP cannot refer for either a CAT scan nor an MRI as they will only be accepted by a Consultant so their surprise may be that it has gotten through the system.  I certainly hope that what im thinking is indeed the case, but Id be like you and want to know asap. The issue is it can take a few days to get this reported on then gotten back to the GP.

Please keep int touch and let us know when you get some answers back as we will be thinking of you meantime. xxx

  • Thank you for replying,

Not welcome to the forum as I have been a member (unfortunately) since 2016,

  • Thank you for your time x

  • Very scary for you especially given your previous experience but if there were negative results I think they would have been more careful with their comments. I can look online at my GP record so if you can keep checking there to see when the results are back. Trouble with cancer is we are never completely worry-free. Good luck and thinking of you xxx

  • Hi  , I remember you from the Awake thread! I pop in there from time to time.
I have no personal experience of MRIs but my sister has recently had one for a knee injury. Apparently her GP couldn’t refer her, she had to wait to see a consultant then be referred by him. So like  , I’d assume that was hopefully the reason for the radiologists shock. But obviously what you really need are your results. Were you given a timescale when the GP referred you? Sorry you’re back in that tortuous limbo land we all know so well. Totally natural to feel that every ache and pain is for the worst reason. I hope you can get some answers soon. Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Hi, I’m really sorry to hear that you going through the scanxiety again. I agree with the others about the process of referral, I’m not sure if I could be referred for an MRI by my GP. I remember when I had pains in my hands and wrists and I needed X-rays ( it turned out to be osteo arthritis in all my fingers and wrists) that I was referred to a consultant first, and then had the X-rays. I understand why you’ve had an MRI, but has anyone mentioned a Dexa scan also, as I assume from your profile that you are still on Letrozole? Just a thought. Xx

  • Hi, I recently saw my Gp for rib pain, she wrote to my oncologist to ask about further investigation. The breast care nurse then phoned me and I had a bone scan , which turned out to be okay. So like the others my Gp didn’t order this investigation. I hope the wait for a answer isn’t too long.

  • Hi,

I do have dexa bone scans every 2 years, osteopenia gradually getting worse:(

Thanks all for the responses- definitely got me thinking! It was a new gp at the surgery, never seen her before. She did have me doing all these stretches which were all ok so she didn’t appear concerned but said she would send me for an mri considering my history and because I have had pain/ache since Xmas. There wasn’t even a discussion! It was really quick too, gp appt on 5th April and mri was on 23rd. I am in Wales - don’t know if that’s why there is a difference. I will keep my fingers crossed.
