Positive deep posterior margins

Hi I found out after requesting my pathology report that I have positive margins called deep posterior margins. It was explained to me now that I've queried this that all of the cancerous breast tissue was removed and it was a slight scrape of chest muscle also. I have been told there is no need for further surgery. I am finding this difficult to not to be concerned about and wondering has anyone else had these?

Hi Sooperkat welcome to the forum and I am so sorry to hear how worried that you are? Have they said what the next step on the treatment journey is for you or is that still to be discussed yet? Do you think more surgery should happen and what makes you think this?

  • I am sorry to hear that you are going through this and it is always a worry when we don’t have all the data.  Doctors can be remiss in not explaining things to us in detail.  Have they mentioned radiation treatments as that could be an option.  I think the best thing is to call and get face to face appointment so you can get your questions answered.  Hugs to you.

  • Hi Barbara, thankyou for your reply. My treatment plan is tamoxifen for 5 years and 8 days of radiotherapy scheduled 12weeks post surgery which is also a concern as was told 4-6 weeks initially but oncotype test and equipment shortage has led to big delay. Surgeon and oncologist assure me I've nothing to worry about, but i don't believe they can say that. The outcomes are still never guaranteed and research I've read differs from what they say. Research is conflicting depending where you read.

  • Hi Gail thankyou for your reply. Radiotherapy is scheduled for 22nd April (12 weeks post op) as there's a big backlog now. I have been given tamoxifen for 5 years which also sounds quite risky. Both positive margins plus delay on Radiotherapy have terrified me. I only found out about positive margins after I requested my pathology report. This plus the fact I was initially told 4-6 weeks for radiotherapy has made me anxious about trusting anything they tell me now. They insist radiotherapy is just as effective as long as its within 12 weeks. They also admit there's not enough data for what happens after 12 weeks. It just doesn't sit right at all.

  • Hi Soooerkat,  I understand about waiting for radiation treatments.  I live in Florida and by the time everything was said and done it was 16 weeks for me to start my radiation treatments.  However I did talk with radiation oncologist and he reassured me it was ok.  There had been so many issues as COVID was still around and the cutoff was 20 weeks.  I tried to calm myself but I know what you mean.  I had 16 treatments to both breasts and an extra 5 day boost to the right as one of my margins for the DCIS was less than 1 mm but there was no ink on tumor so felt ok with it.  I wonder if you will get a boost of radiation too.  Hugs to you.

  • I had the same but told not to worry as chemo and radio would sort it out. X
