Help, need ideas on what to use for pain of late effects from radiotherapy. I have been checked and basically told it’s normal and to use ibroprofen gel and take paracetamol , which worked for a couple of months but has now stopped working. My breast is so hard , I have been massaging with the cream hospital gave me ( zerobase) but don’t know what else to try. Pain is getting me down. I’ve tried so many different bras and no bra but nothing helps much.

  • anyone know how long incontinence lasts after chemoradiation for anal cancer?

  • Hi Bikechick

Welcome to the Community, I'm Daisy53 one of the Community Champions on this forum.  The question you have asked would be better asked in the Anal cancer forum as nobody in this forum would be able to answer your question.  Here's the link to that forum: Anal cancer forum .

  • Ouch!!  Painful for sure.  I had bilateral radiation to breasts and did daily massage for a year and then still occasionally after that.  It did work for me as I was concerned about scar tissue.  Some people are more prone to it too.    I have attached the best video which describes the technique for breast massage.  It helped me as I was clueless.  Hope it helps you too and a gentle hug to you.

  • Hi, I am so sorry to hear you are in so much pain. I have also suffered with various late effects. Can you ask your BCN to refer you for scar therapy? Or you might be able to do this yourself. For example, my local hospice has a self referral scheme for therapies for cancer patients and this includes scar therapy. The practitioner I saw really eased the tightness in my breast and taught me techniques to massage myself. She also recommended lymphatic drainage - there is a good youtube video on this - but it is against rules to post it. You might be able to find a private practitioner otherwise.
hope you can get it sorted.

  • Hi sorry to hear your story and do understand. I had a lumpectomy and lymph node removal on left breast followed by radiotherapy which I reacted badly to. Burnt, split, bleeding skin. This did improve but 2 years on am still getting pains in breast. Like you tried paracetamol and ibropufen, was told by my oncologist (also have lung lesion and metastic bone cancer)it was probably neuropathy pain. He recommended gabapentin. This does take time to kick in. I also somtimes use lidocaine patches which do help. There is also cream recommended by my macmillan nurse which can help to reduce discomfort its called dermacool. Don't know if any of this will help but good luck.

  • I was told same thing that it was neuropathy pain.my op was 2 years ago. I tried lidocaine patches and a cream my macmillan nurse recommended called dermocool both of which helped. There is also a tablet called gabapentin which my oncologist suggested, not taken as hate taking pills. Am already taking chemo and hormone drugs and couldn't face any more. Gabapentin does take time to kick in so maybe worth asking your doctor or oncologist. Hope this helps even a little.

  • If its neuropathic pain amytriptyline is very helpful. I was prescribed it by my chronic pain consultant first time around.

This time I have very hard breast(Old LD with new implant) which is also lumpy. I finished radiotherapy in october and had it scanned in January due to it being so hard etc. Results were expected surgical/radiotherapy changes.

Hope you can get some help with your pain. Xx
