I have been taking Anastrozole for 1 year now. I have had the usual issues along with ongoing vaginal dryness, but my latest concern is my blurry vision, I went to the optician 18 months ago all was ok, no change in prescription. I went yesterday only to be told I am borderline for driving and my prescription had gone from -3.50 to -4.00 distance, and near vision from +2.25 to +2.50. My optician was shocked by the change. I think it must be down to taking Anastrozole, and wonder if my vision will continue to deteriorate over the next 5-10 years. I wasn’t expecting this side effect. Does anyone else have similar issues, I would love to hear from you. Thanks
Gosh that must have been a shock. Sorry to hear that, I’m on Anastrozole too but so far so good re vision, I think. But I’m due an eye test so will see (literally!). I’ve had 2 since going on to it and in fact my distance vision had improved slightly at my last test, but I think that can happen with age? But I’m not sure. I’ll let you know. It’s been slightly over 2 years since my last one so definitely need to get it booked. My close vision has been deteriorating slowly over many years so it’s hard to tell if the Anastrozole is contributing to that (I’m 64). It’s a horrible thing when the tablet that is hopefully keeping the beast at bay has these unfortunate side effects. Love and hugs, HFxx
Hi Joules, I started a stream a couple of months back

I am 3 years post chemo etc and now on exemestane. I have bouts of eye pain for which I have been taking dry eye drops. My eyesight has massively deteriorated. The pain is intermittent lasts between 5 and 15 minutes and feels a little like what happens when you peel onions. Also, gritty feeling at times. I changed from letrozole to exemestane but first developed eye pain when taking letrozole. I asked my optician but they were unable to say if the aromatase inhibitor was causing the pain/deterioration and just sold me the eye drops which I have used for about 2 years. My query is has anyone else had similar? If so any successful remedy? I also found some research that said aromatase inhibitors can cause damage but I cannot now find it. Can anyone help me with this? Many thanks
Exemestane is an alternative aromatase inhibitor to Anastrozole. You might be interested in this piece of research
I went to my GP who referred me for eye evaluation but this just involved being sent back to my ophthalmic practitioner who just said it was dry eyes and the beginning of cataracts. I was recommended to use dry eye drops 4 times a day but they are expensive and you are expected to purchase them rather than get them on repeat prescription. Like you it is my long sight that has deteriorated and I have gone from being told I no longer need to wear glasses for driving to you MUST have glasses with a stronger prescription. I can't read sub titles on the TV and need larger print on the computer. My close eyesight funnily is somewhat better . The reverse order for someone in their 70s where the norm is much worse close sight and better long sight. I didn't feel I got any explanation that helped but I am presuming my long term vision is not in danger. If you get anything helpful I would like to know.
PS sorry I don't know how you look up old streams.
Hello JoulesG, I was very concerned when I started Anastrazole as I have a history of detached retinas in both eyes. I saw my retina specialist before starting it and he reassured me that with all the work and reattaching I should be fine. Well I was relieved.
Opticians are fine but with your symptoms I would recommend an ophthalmologist as they are eye doctors. There are things that Anastrazole can cause with the eyes so good to have a super thorough exam.
Wish you well and take care.
Barbara
I had chemo and am now on exemestane. My eyesight was deteriorating before that, but it has increased paced since treatment. I've had a new prescription the last 3 years since treatment and I know my eyes aren't as sharp any more with glasses so I'm intending to go again soon.
I don't know whether it's the chemo, bisphosphonates, exemestane or the effects of being in a medical menopause with zoladex!
The same happened to me I had just finished chemotherapy and radiotherapy , started letrozole. I went to the optician and was told like you that my eye sight had deteriorated and it was borderline for driving. I was also told l had dry eye so was advised to get a heated eye mask and hylo drops which I done, l went back to optician after a month of using eye pad ad drops l had another check and found my dry eye had improved and my blurred vision was a little bit better. Optician advised me to return in six months for another check.
there is a slight improvement but somedays I can hardly see it so depressing , spoke to oncologist nurse she advised me not to change my glasses yet.
