Starting paclitaxel

I have just completed 4 rounds of EC and the side effects have been ok, mainly fatigue. I had 1-2 days about a week after when I felt fed up with it all due to aches from filagastrim, fatigue and weird appetite but then I’d start feeling more normal again. I’m about to start fortnightly paclitaxel and having seen the consultant today and read some of the posts on this forum I’m scared about the side effects, in particular being told some people get excruciating pain. I understand this is about 10% of patients but it’s still scaring me. Can anyone reassure me that it’s not that bad?

  • Don’t believe it ! Everyone is different but I sailed through EC, which I had first, 4 x 3 weekly.

Nothing to report - but did lose hair which grew back.

    xx

  • Thanks Trentender thats made me feel better, that’s what i’m having too 4x3 weekly cycles of EC and i’m still going to cold cap, then it’s on to surgery and  immunotherapy xx

  • Hi  I think the worst of EC is the fatigue, so just listen to your body when it needs to rest. I did get some nausea and had to keep my blood sugar up to deal with it. I also got a bit of constipation with one round. Will you have filagastrim or similar to boost your white blood cell count? I found those gave me flu-like aches.

  •   I guess I’m fortunate in that I only have it fortnightly so less hospital trips. Although I’m going in weekly to have my Picc line flushed and then a week later for bloods and then the chemo appointment. It’s never ending isn’t it?! But I’m halfway through so the end is in sight! I’ve had surgery already so after chemo I’ll be on tamoxifen

  • Hi CH_84

Thanks for the information it’s very helpful,i’m not sure about the filagastrim but I will definitely ask my Oncologist about this

  • Hi Flamingo18, I have also just finished 4 rounds of EC and had minimal side effects. Little bit fatigue and diarrhoea/gas during the first cycle but fine for the next 3. I took the anti sickness meds religiously for 3 days after each round  and never got sick. I took Sennakot for the constipation which the anti sickness meds cause. Otherwise EC has been fine for me. Just drink tonnes of water for at least 4 days, I drank 3 litres a day. I also drank green smoothies and ate probiotic yoghurt if my appetite allowed it which I think has helped my recovery.

  • Hi Sarar,

Thanks for the reply and great advice,I will definitely take the anti sickness meds and drink plenty of water and the smoothies, hopefully if the side effects are not too bad as you say I should be fine x
