Just received a letter saying I have 30mm lesion/lump and says u5 and m5 still awaiting biopsy results any advice guessing this means it’s definitely cancer

  • It suggests ultra sound and mammogram results show as cancer but not definite until biopsy results. Hope you don’t have to wait long. Sending hugs xx

  • Hi K.M,

I too received a letter today (had 2WW screening last week)

mine said 2cm abnormality on mammo & 19mm on ultrasound. Not sure what your u5 & m5 mean. Could you ring the breast department or a Macmillan nurse? They may be able to explain this. Sending best wishes xx

  • 5 means definitely cancer on a scale is 1 (clear) to 5:(

  • All this is new to me and K.M. Thank you for the explanation. Sending love to K.M & hope you get your results & treatment plan soon. The wait is horrible xx

  • The medical staff use a scale of 1-5 when looking at ultrasound and mammogram images to indicate how likely they think it is to be cancer.  Unfortunately 5 does mean they think it highly likely.  I remember the doctor who did my ultrasound (which he graded a 5) saying very occasionally other things looked like what he was seeing, but I should prepare myself to hear I had cancer. The biopsy will give a definitive answer including the grade and what, if any, receptors it has. At that point they will also have a treatment plan. Sorry you find yourself here.

  • Cheers due to go next week and you keep in touch I’m just so worried as got two daughters

  • Thank you what are receptors

  • Ok thanks for confirming

  • Whether the cancer is fed by any of Oestrogen, progesterone or HER2. Treatment plans differ depending on this.  There are more treatments for cancers that are fed by one or more of these than for those that aren’t (triple negative cancers have no receptors for any of these).
