New to the group. Hello. I'm having a mastectomy of my left breast but also have non-invasive cancer in the right breast. Because I have very large breasts I have been offered a mastectomy on this side (if I want one) or a wide local excision. If it had only been the right side affected, as it currently is, a mastectomy wouldn't have been offered. It's being offered now because of the asymmetry that would result and the possible effect on posture. I'm leaning towards a mastectomy but have a couple of days to make a decision. Does anyone have any advice or experience they'd be willing to share? Please?
Hello Mellyme
Is it a double Mastectomy or single? If double I had this but for various reasons, I was not able to have reconstruction. The operation was fine, I also had 3/4 nodes checked also fine. I had very few problems afterwards, not even drains. I am in my early 70s so I don't mind being flat too much but I would mind if I were any younger. I insisted on the double because I would have ended up very uncomfortable and lopsided with one flat chest and one 38H boob! If you want look at my profile. Good luck with whatever you decide x
Thank you Rozalia. It would be double mastectomy if I choose it for the right side but a single if I don't. Either way there will be at least one mastectomy and I need surgery on both sides anyway. I'm 38G so I would be very lopsided without a double mastectomy too. Lots to think about. Hope you're well x
Hello and welcome. I hope this helps. Although I had breast cancer only in the left breast I had a mammoplasty operation because I was like you a G cup. However, in the end, I had to have a mastectomy on the left breast. The surgeon told me it was the best outcome because my right breast had been reduced to a C cup. Therefore I’ve ended up with a much reduced breast size and I feel it’s the best positive I possibly could have had from a bad situation. My clothes fit better and no sore shoulders from bra straps digging in. . I was offered reconstruction but I chose to wear a prosthesis instead. You have a difficult decision that only you can make but I would say, go with your gut and that’s the advice my surgeon gave to me. I wish you all the best. M x
