Ongoing Pain

Just wondering if anyone has ongoing breast and arm pain after completion of treatment. I had Mammoplasty/lumpectomy surgery in February this year with 2 lymph’s removed, Chemo May until September, radiotherapy October, on Herceptin until May 24 and started Tamoxifen 3 months ago but I have had pain ever since biopsy in December 22. I’ve mentioned this to various professionals along the way and always been told it’s normal but something just doesn’t feel right. Is this normal for anyone else?

  • I have had very different treatment and no doubt am a lot older but instinctively it doesn't sound right to me. I had no pain following my biopsy. A year of pain doesn't sound normal. You have a right to a detailed explanation and full informed understanding. Platitudes aren't helpful. Do you have someone to support you in your demand for explanations. You need someone on your side. I had my daughter, without her I would have had my oestrogen positive tumour forgotten and untreated. They omitted to tell us that one of my 3 tumours was oestrogen positive.

We get some wonderful treatment from some very lovely and caring people but that shouldn't prevent us getting full answers and explanations. Very good luck xx

  • Hi, sorry to hear you’ve been suffering pain.  I had therapeutic mammoplasty followed by two more ops the last one being a mastectomy.   Then l had radiotherapy, all this started last August and ended in January.  I had an awful lot of discomfort but not the pain you describe.  At my review last month my surgeon felt all the relevant areas and it hurt. She said that will be due to radiotherapy.

It didn’t sound right to me that you have a lot of pain after so long so I would ask for an oncology appointment if I were you.

    Best wishes x

  • Hi

Im sorry you are having ongoing pain , that doesn’t seem right and your team should be listening to you . I’d insist on being seen again , don’t put up with it lovely

similar to Mibby , I have discomfort still around the mastectomy area but only really when pressed / touched , but not pain anymore . I had my check up in October and the surgeon said the discomfort would be from the radiotherapy

    hugs xx

  • Thanks Rosalia, I’ve left another message for my BC nurse hopefully she’ll call me back although I don’t hold much hope as I called last Friday and still not heard anything Disappointed I’ve also booked an appointment with my GP.

I agree it doesn’t feel right to be so painful for so long. Last night I had codeine before bed and then again when I woke with the pain in the early hours.

  • Thanks Mibby, my oncologist at The Christie discharged me as soon as my chemo was done, I am back under the Nightingale unit and my GP. I’ve tried to contact my BC nurse to no avail so now have a GP appointment today Disappointed

  • Thanks Dollydimple, I’m going to the GP today as my oncologist has discharged me back to them and the Nightingale unit and they are not returning my calls.

    • I’m surprised you’ve been discharged so early.  I am still under both oncology and breast unit. In fact I have another checkup next year with the breast unit and oncology.  If the nightingale unit is your breast unit I would be persistent in trying to contact them.  I’m sorry for you that you have to go through the rigmarole of raising their attention, it’s not right.   I hope your GP can help you. Take care and please let us know how you get on.  X
  • Hi V1972, I had my ops in oct and nov last year. I’m on tamoxifen and finishing of my targeted treatment. I’m still uncomfortable on my boob and under arm, some days more than others. My bones are also sore from the radiotherapy. I’m hoping overtime it will subside but for now I just carry on as normal. My oncologist and surgeon know and they have said it’s normal and everything checks out ok.
If you have concerns have a chat with your breast care nurse and maybe ask for it to be throughly checked.
    Wishing you all the best.

  • As I mentioned on a different post I had a mastectomy with lymph nodes removed in April followed by chemotherapy and have felt that I have nerve damage and occasional pain/ heaviness since. Again Tod it’s normal but heard there is a condition called Post Mastectomy Pain Syndrome which you may partly have due to the lymph node involvement. Could be worth looking into. Hope this helps
