so reality hit for 2nd time this whole journey, (so glad we did some nice things, lunches out, long walks, had no idea i would be on my knees so quickly!) yesterday, in cancer chemo warrd, cool cap done, cannula done, chemo in, sent home with tablets galore, and think christmas for us two will be what it will be, but i cant get my head around self injecting, not got much flesh anyway, dont want husband to do it in case he doesnt realise its hurting and god love him he normally hates needles, but has been so strong for both of us, watched a couple of videos but not helping.

any advice, words of comfort so much appreciated, also can hardly keep my eyes open  thnk you

  • Hi, it’s not pleasant injecting yourself but I found it wasn’t inserting needle that was uncomfortable but injecting fluid that was the problem. I took injection out of fridge 10 minutes before and injected solution slowly. This worked for me.

  • In 2019 the District Nurse did mine. I had the option to do it myself but like you did not want to! If you explain your difficulty they might help. Good Luck x

  • I was terrified too - I did it in my thigh. Pinched some skin, held needle at approx 45 degree angle and pushed  plunger - boom in it went  :). It didn’t hurt me but I still dreaded doing it. Deffo take it out of fridge before hand - I can’t remember how long before but it should tell you on the packet.  I also took an antihistamine before hand as it’s supposed to help avoid any bone aches after. Best to check with doc though before taking any non prescription stuff

    Best wishes xx

  • I was REALLY scared about this too. My husband has been doing this for me and it’s absolutely fine. You barely feel it. Promise it’s ok

  • My husband did mine for me.

He was reluctant in case it hurt me but understood it had to be done.

I just laid back on the sofa, grabbed some belly and looked the other way.

It is more comfortable if you take it out of the fridge approx 30 mins before.

I also did mine at 9pm so any side effects calmed down overnight.

  • Aw I was the same…I had the district nurse come to do first one..well I did it whilst she watched me! It’s honestly so much better than you think… grab a bit of belly…45 degree angle & push in the needle & you will be surprised that it’s doesn’t hurt ..it’s quite a rhin needle…. I then felt ok to do the others myself….   Tip..the little top protecting the needle is sometimes a bit stiff when you pull it off…hold the main bit when pulling it ..once I didn’t realise my thumb was already on the plunger bit & I squirted some of  it into the air when the lid came off oooos!
yes I agree with everyone ..take it out of the fridge a good 10/15 mins before .. xx.
I was advised to take paracetamol if I had any bone aches (take your temp first though)…

Good luck with it & rest of your treatment x

  • as most say very scary first time, but its not so bad, i had nurse show me first time and after that it was not like woohoo, but it doesnt really hurt, once was a bit pinchy, but

just pick fleshy bit where u have lightly pinch (like measuring pinch nothard pinch) and the do it, its quick very small needle, then inject also very small amount of fluid so not like flu shots

can u ask nurse for help for first?

  • thank you, nurse did show us  at the appontment ure coldcap - chemo, nothing really sinking in BUT thanks for all your comments, took out of fridge 30 minutes before, checked instructions, and did ok, wiped with alcohol wipe, inserted into  abdomen this time on right, so will change to left tomorrow. and was ok, wasnt high fiving but the sense i had done it was amazing, small hurdles and all that.

thank you all again, any one staring treatment putting xmas and new year on hold, just me and hubby so all up in the air, think treatment and recovery will be the decider x

  • Good idea re switching sides each day.  I forgot to mention I did that.
