Can I ask if it’s usual to be prescribed Calci-D at the time of being prescribed letrozole.  My oncologist requested my gp to prescribe both.

I currently have worsening heartburn and sometimes acid reflux and was wondering if the calci-d might be causing it.   My other medication is Abemaciclib.

I would like to know how common it is to be prescribed calci-d with letrozole. Many thanks.

  • HI

Yes, it's the standard.  I was on anastrozole (which does the same thing - still haven't worked out why letrozole vs anastrozole) and I was prescribed them.  I finished taking mine after 5 years and the prescription for Vit D and calcium has continued because the letrozole/ anastrozole is reducing our oestrogen and thus weakening our bones.

It might be an idea to ask the GP if he can come up with an alternative that won't give you heartburn if these are indeed causing it.

    Kindest Wishes, Lesley

  • Hi, I’m on the same medication as yourself. Adcal is to protect you against osteoporosis.

  • I've just started Letrozole and will be starting on Abemaciclib soon.

I haven't been prescribed anything but the specialist nurse who saw me last advised I start a vitamin D supplement for my bones.

  • Thanks for your answer, I’m pleased that it’s normal to be prescribed this, I wouldn’t want to be in the minority. My prescription is for ten years and if you have to continue after Letrozole finishes the an my age I’d say it’s for life.
    I wish you well. X

  • Thank you for your reply. It’s very helpful.
    best wishes. X

  • Will you have it as a prescription?  Mine is a monthly prescription via my GP.

  • No I've been told to buy an over the counter supplement.

I'll be getting a weeks worth of calcium supplement to take when I have my zoledronic acid infusion but other than that I have to sort myself.

  • If you are entitled to free prescriptions I would ask your GP to prescribe it. If you pay for prescriptions it may be that it is as cheap or cheaper to buy it yourself x

  • Anyone who has had cancer is entitled to free prescriptions for 5 years so I got an exemption certificate a few months ago.  However, the team haven't prescribed it so there's not much I can do I think,  it was "advice".

  • If the majority are prescribed it and if they advise it, I don’t understand why you cannot have it for free. Maybe speak to your oncology team.
