I had a smx 5 weeks and an axiĺlary clearance 2 weeks ago. Significant nerve pain after mastectomy and have been prescribed gabapentin which has helped. Over the whole area where the breast was is incredibly sensitive and also quite numb
can’t bear anything to touch it like clothing, if it moves over it, it is a really unpleasant and unbearable sensation. Couldn’t really say it’s pain but difficult to describe. Ironically it feels better if there is light but constant pressure such as putting my hand on it. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything they found that helps? Its really getting me down as its not improving at all and worried I'm stuck with it...
Hi,
I'm sorry you're having a distressing time. I'm almost 4 weeks post mastectomy and axillary node clearance. I had horrible burning pain to my upper arm for about 10 days, before it settled - started about day 10. I found resting my arm on a pillow helped, as did keeping going with the arm exercises after paracetamol. It's settled now, but I still have pain in some places down my arm when touched - using paracetamol and again, I've found keeping my arm supported at night has helped. I've also got a sleeve from amazon to try, but this might be making the axillary swelling worse if I wear it too long. My mastectomy site is numb, as is some of my upper arm -I'm told this is permanent.
I hope things settle for you soon. There are so many strange sensations, it's hard to know what is normal and not, even with being told what to expect.
I had exactly the same thing! I couldn't bear anything touching my skin. It was a sort of sore extreme itching. I used the heart shaped pillow we were given to hold my clothes away from my skin, a bit like a tent. It helped a lot at night and when I was at home. Going out was more tricky as the tent wasn't a good look! I couldn't wear any sort of bra so just wore a loose shirt, which I could tolerate for a short outing. I do remember feeling pretty desperate but the good news is that it did go away. I think it had completely gone by 6 weeks post mastectomy. So there is light at the end of the tunnel!
