Hi, had surgery last week for lumpectomy and some reconstruction. As a result I've got quite a large wound across my whole breast and second one in my armpit where they took the sentinel nodes.
I had my dressing taken off yesterday and asked about showering but I've been left a little confused so thought I would ask on here as well. The nurse told me to just put my back to the shower and try not to get any of the wounds wet and not to use any soap/ shower gel, or wear deodorant and to do this for 8 weeks post surgery! I'm a bit concerned that without being able to wash my armpits properly or use deodorant, I'm going to really start to smell!
Any tips/ advice please?! Thanks xx
Sorry to hear you had to have surgery. I had exactly the same problem. I had shallow baths and used a damp flannel in my armpits. After about 2 weeks I used Wild Deodorant being careful not to touch the wound. I was surprised how little I sweated. Good luck with your recovery xxx
Hi 2blackcats, I had a lumpectomy and axillary clearance and also had to keep my wounds dry. Like Rowliegirl said, shallow baths are good, I would use shower gel avoiding all the wound areas.. I also used to have flannel washes too using soap. I did wash under arms but was careful not to get near wounds. Depending on the type of shower you have, if it's one you can hold by hand then its probably easy enough to hold it and just shower back and avoid front. Fixed showers are a little more difficult but it is still possible. I didn't use deodorant and have found since surgery I have not needed it. That was since the end of last November. I too am amazed at how little I sweat now.
Wishing you all the best.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried a shallow bath and tried to wash armpits while holding a dry flannel over the wound. It was a bit tricky but hopefully will get easier with practice. I do tend to get a bit sweaty, particularly at certain times in the month. Hopefully I can mask it with perfume. Xx
