Hi all, I am 43 and my chemotherapy will start on 3rd November. I need your help and opinions on wigs. Which one is best and where can I get it? Is it better to shave my hair before the treatment starts?
I’ve type 2 diabetes so how does this treatment affect my diabetes?
Hi Neha, I went to my local MacMillan centre where they had a lady who specialised in wig. She was able to order a variety of different colour and styles for me to try. I went before I started chemo so she could she my natural hair style and colour as I didn’t want to go wild and change my appearance too much. She also had some in a wig bank which were cheaper too. There are shops around offering help too, hove and Brighton have trendco. I’ve not visited a shop so I can’t advise on that. Also take some photos of your hair style and colour. That way you have something to show as a guide if you need too. I think but can’t fully remember (sorry chemo brain) that I sent photos to help when looking online so they were able to give some guidance on wigs they had available as I could spend hours trawling through all the styles.
I didn’t shave my head, I left my hair to fall out naturally as I was going through treatment. I cold capped and my hair is growing back well. For me I wasn’t going to give in and cut or shave my head. Everyone is different and I know that lots of people cut and shave as it is hard to watch your hair disappear.
Wishing you all the best.

Hi my hospital gave me a voucher for half the amount on the NHS so may be worth asking but did have to go to specified dealer. I had my first chemo and within two weeks my hair was coming out in handfuls. It drove me mad. So I braved the shave but had my wig and hats at the ready. Like you I had my treatment through the winter months which made hat wearing easier too. Good luck you got this . I now have a full head of hair slightly curly (was very curly when first came back) so keep going you will get through xx
Hi Neha
I had very long hair so decided to have it cut into a shorter style before starting chemo. My hospital gave me a £100 voucher to use against the price of a wig from a list of suppliers and hairdressers. I choose one from a hairdresser so that I could have my hair cut into a similar style to the wig.
My hair started to fall out after a couple of weeks and, when it became noticeable, I got my husband to use his hair clippers to cut it to about half an inch all over. I never went entirely bald and my hair started to grow back before I finished chemo.
All my treatment has finished and I'm good thanks.
