well things are going real fast eekk!! but its a good thing really, Have a pre assement on Tuesday and been booked for surgery Friday. so all in all will be about 4 weeks ..what I wanted to ask was before surgery I have to go to Nuclear medicine , ?  is that for the wire/dye ?

  • Hi I think it's for sentinel lymph node blue dye to show up any cancer cells and to know if they need to remove any . Good luck.

I had mine biopsied before surgery as MRI flagged up risk. Ended up having lymph node clearance 10/14 cancerous. Was all done under one op. But sadly meant I needed chemo too. All active treatment done surgery, chemo and radio. Now on AI's.Just had clear results for second year xx

  • will I have to have MRI before surgery?

  • Hi Julie

i had the blue dye inserted in nuclear medicine, completely painless. I had the wires put in in the breast care unit. I didn’t have an MRI scan, I had one lymph node removed and a lumpectomy to remove cancerous cells.
    Good luck with your surgery

  • oh good pheww lol. sounds similar to what I shall be having, thanks Slight smile, what did they put you on after surgery? did you have radiotherapy? or just hormones?

  • Hi Julie it is to highlight sentinel nodes prior to biopsy during surgery, well that’s what I understood it has! I had mine done the day before and takes about 5mins! I had a lumpectomy and they advised a further dye is used during surgery. Which obviously we don’t feel as under anaesthetic. What surgery are you having if you don’t mind me asking? Four weeks is really quick, I waited two and a half months from diagnosis and MRI! They would have advised if a MRI was required prior to surgery x

  • thanks for answering ,I am having a Lumpectomy, I just got the letter regarding the dye , I will have just before surgery. yes it is fast our hospital I think has  31 day from diagnose to surgery time scale so I read earlier .

  • Hi Julie Too, I had to visit the nuclear medicine department the day before my lumpectomy and it was to inject the radioactive dye by the tumour. From what I understand this then is taken up by the tumour and starts to go towards the sentinel lymph nodes. The surgeon can then use the click noise this dye emits with a special machine. I also had a blue dye injected whilst having my op and this was so she had a visual too and was able to see the sentinel nodes. I had only 2, one of which was positive.
    Wishing you all the best.

  • thankyou , so seems like i could look like a smurf lol.   so after your surgery did they put you on hormone treatment or radiotherapy or ?

  • The blue dye did give my boob a faint blue tinge but it didn’t last long. Your wee will also have a blue tinge too. So yes very Smurf looking. I had surgery, chemo, radiotherapy, after which I started my hormone treatment. I also have targeted treatment to. It does seem that some people get to start hormone treatment in between but that maybe if there is long delays between treatments maybe. Mine was very consistent and I didn’t have long break between.
    Wishing you all the best.
