Hi everyone, I was diagnosed back at the end of May with local recurrent breast cancer(DCIS no lymph nodes invoved). Originally I was due to have surgery and then radiotherapy. After 2 surgeries they said it was likely I would now need chemo and radiotherapy as the tumour was 21mm so marginally stage 3.

The oncologist has said I need 4 lots of EC every 3 weeks and then 12 lots of paclitaxel. My surgeon said it was a close call on chemo but because it had already come back once that it was advised.

I'm due to start Chemo on Friday and petrified. I don't know whether to say I just want Radiotherapy instead of both because I've heard horror stories about the EC Chemo and the long term side effects.

I would love other people's opinions please and to share their stories. I just don't know what to do.

  • Hi, I have an 3 ec and the side effects I have experienced was nausea and tiredness, some  bouts of dizziness for 1st 2, the last one I was fine just tired on the day. I have now had one of docetaxel, due to have 2nd one Wednesday also have started phesgo injections no side effects at all so far from the change in drug x

  • Hi Lola1984,

What a difficult place you find yourself.

I was diagnosed with triple positive cancer in 2021 and, following surgery, my treatment consisted of 3xEC and Herceptin for 1 year with radiotherapy. Although it wasn't always easy, for me it was manageable and I am glad that I completed it , hoping that it gives me the best chance of survival . I don't appear to have any long term side effects. I found that the anticipation was very much worse than the actual treatment itself.

Whichever choice you decide to make, I wish you all the very best .If you do have chemo, you may be able to join, or set up a group on the forum, who start chemotherapy at the same time,  so that you have some friendly support .

Take care and love and hugs.xx

  • Hi, thanks very much for the reply. Glad to hear that you are doing well on the new chemo x

  • Thank you so much for your reply. I'm really glad you are doing well Blush I'm pretty sure I'm going to go ahead with it, I think I'm just having a bit of a wobble xx

  • glad a wobble is normal, had a few over the weekend, currently booked for masectomy 12th oct right side due to calcification being present, otherwise may have just been smaller procedure.  husband seems to have taken it in, just not sinking in, dont want to put my head in the sand, and trying to do my research, any tips how i help/stay strong for my lovely husband xx  thank you all

  • Trust me, a wobble is definitely normal. When I first had it 5 years ago I wasn't as stressed weirdly. That's when I had my mastectomy. I really didn't find it that bad but I know everyone is different.

Try not worry too much and I hope everything goes ok xx

  • thanks lola, was that enough with the mastectomy, also  i know everyone is different, but been told hospital signs you off 2 weeks after the op, but do you mind me asking mentally was you able to go back to work, have to say my employee has been amazing with the whole of october off paid, but still so up in the air, xx

  • I started my treatment with 3x 3 weekly EC I felt a bit off for the first six days feeling sick , light headed and tired but by the sixth day I was fine.

I have done 7 paclitaxel which I was having weekly two more left to do hardly no side effects at all just had blurred vision and tired on the day of treatment. I will be getting 15 radiotherapy after chemotherapy. As soon you get the first done it’s fine.

I have been fine I am glad to get all the treatment over with and get my life back to normal, i was told in the beginning that I would need chemotherapy but to take it as a insurance policy to get rid of any  cancer that may be left.

you will be fine just take it a week at a time xx

  • Hi, please try not to worry too much(easier said than done) To be completely honest I was in a really good place mentally after my mastectomy because I was buzzing my lymph nodes were clear. It's just waiting for your histology results that's nerve-racking. Personally I have a fairly physical job so went to work after about 3 weeks, but like I said everyone is different. Just take it day by day. The first time around I had no treatment as they didn't think it would benefit me but unfortunately hindsight is a wonderful thing. All I would say is that just concentrate on your surgery at moment and recover well from that. I really hope everything goes well with your mastectomy, just keep positive xx

  • Thank you so much. I'm glad you are over it now xx
