hi, I am currently having 7 cycles of chemo for inflammatory stage 3 grade 3 her2+ breast cancer. I will then have a mastectomy and ancillary node clearance, radiotherapy and more chemo. Will then be flat for about a year before reconstruction. It will be full mastectomy and I am really freaking out about keloid or hypertrophic scarring and coping with the visual impact. I know that this type of scarring is typical on black skin although people keep telling me it will fade to nothing, this is not likely to be the case. Does anyone have any experience with this problem. I have not yet had an appointment with the surgeon to discuss expected visual outcomes.
Hi. I had a mastectomy late last year. My breast nurse team noticed my scar was a bit bumpy and suggested trying some silicone scar tape. I bought it online. It can vary a lot in price but I chose some that was about £11. You put it on and leave it on after a few trial runs to check for any skin reactions. You change it when it is no longer sticky. You can get it wet. I used it for about 3 months, basically until I felt the scar was feeling and looking better. But you can use it longer. My scar is looking good and fading well and smooth. I do have white skin. Hope this helps and good luck for the surgery.
Thanks Lib. I’ll have a look online and discuss with my nurse. ️
Hello ShazPBoro, oh I can certainly understand your concerns about keloids and hyperpigmentation. Keloids do not fade and one of the treatments is steroid injections. I will do some research and see what I find. Do you have s history of keloids and hyperpigmentation?
Sounds like you have a lot to do treatment wise so big hugs and take care of yourself.

hi Barb, thanks so much for your response. I’ve a couple of keloid scars that I’ve had since I was 5 and 7 which are still raised and very visible, and a difficult colour to the surrounding skin. Was not aware about steroid injections for this. This is all really helpful info to talk through with my surgeon and oncologist. Thank you.
Hi again, here is an excellent link for you from one of the best cancer hospitals here in US.

Can you get a plastic surgeon on your team? Since you have a history of this problem I would recommend they address that too. Sometimes Dr.s are so focused on just the surgery they forget the whole picture. Barbara
