I’m due to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction with DIEP next week and the nerves are starting to kick in! Any advice on how to handle this, especially on the morning of surgery. I’m particularly worried about the bit where my husband has to leave, even though the surgical team is amazing. Also anxious about being put under anaesthetic.
Hi CG, I can't offer much advise as I am in the same boat as you. I have my appointment with the surgeon tomorrow to confirm details of mastectomy and temporary reconstruction. Likely I'll then have radiotherapy and DIEP reconstruction afterwards.
I can tell you I have been under general before and the theatre staff are amazing. You won't be left alone and someone kind will be with you until you go to sleep. When you wake up the recovery nurses are also amazing. You won't feel alone. There are drugs they can give you to relieve the anxiety on the day of surgery and complementary therapies that might help. Worth discussing with your doctor. No point in being stressed if you don't need to be.

Hi It’s just over two months since my left mastectomy.
I had immediate reconstruction and was so so scared mainly about anaesthetic as never had one before.
Can honestly say it wasn’t as bad as I thought.
I just remember lying there whilst they injected me and waking up as if no time has gone by.
I recovered so well too. Tbh it’s taken away my lifelong fear of having anaesthetics.
You’ll be fine and sending my best wishes xxx
Hello CG_84, First thing is I wish you the best outcome in your upcoming surgery. It is so normal to feel nervous before the procedure but remember everyone is very skilled and they will take good care of you. Anesthesia is so wonderful as it is kind of like a state where you don’t remember anything when you wake up. Maybe bring a book with you and try to read at the hospital. I think it is more relaxing than looking at the phone etc. practice deep breathing and just realize that you are moving forward. Hugs and prayers for you.

Hello CG, your nerves are completely understandable. Find what works for you in helping to relax, for me pre operation it was baths and relaxing yoga / stretching. I had my first general anaesthetic 7 weeks ago and yes it was hard saying goodbye to my husband. Your medical team are there to help and will understand your nervousness. I only remember the smell of the gas and the next thing I knew I woke up in a recovery room with a friendly nurse at the end of my bed who checked on me regularly to see how I was recovering.
Sending healing thoughts,
