Good morning ,
For those that have done chemo, I had first chemo (Ec) yesterday and wondering if I should take the anti sickness tablet today. I definitely felt nauseous yesterday despite being given meds before chemo. Those meds also kept me sleeping most of the day and night. I feel okay now and weary of taking the anti sickness meds because of drowsiness effects , but also I have heard to not wait for nausea but to take it anyway. I’m thinking I just wait till I feel the slightest sign of nausea and then take … is that a good plan ?
Hi, during my first cycle I only took them when I felt nauseous, but found they didn't help, it was too late. During subsequent cycles I took them for the first 4-5 days no matter how I felt and actually I didn't suffer from much sickness, so my preference was to take them irregardless. The anti sickness meds never made me tired by the way, Hope this helps and best wishes as you get through this.
The nurse explained to me that you need to do everything you can to avoid being sick. It was strongly recommended to me that I take them before nausea had chance to strike. Once you start feeling nauseous, apparently it is much harder to alleviate the symptoms and then prevent it in the first place, and it has serious implications for your hydration.
I had a second round of EC yesterday and have just taken an anti-sickness this morning, and I’m desperately hoping I can keep it down long enough to work!
I was told to take them as instructed, every x number of hours, whether I felt nauseous or not. It is far harder to stop chemo nausea than preventing it in the first place.
Even with all the anti-sickness pills, I still ended up vomiting after my first EC cycle and had to be hospitalised as I just could not stop. After that, they gave me even stronger anti-sickness pills on top of the ones I already had to take.
They all made me really constipated, so I had to take loads for that too!
Chemo is one big balancing act. I just resigned myself to feeling rubbish for the duration. I also allowed myself to have the first few days doing very little after my experience of the first cycle, and then I worked from home after that.
Hi Iman, I had EC and I had ondansetron and domperidone and there was another one but I can’t remember the name.
My routine was on the day of chemo I was given all 3 of them. After chemo I didn’t then have anything until in the middle of the night (even if I didn’t feel sick) when I took 1 Ondansetron and then in the morning I had my Domperidone. Then mid morning I would have the other one that I can’t remember the name of (that finished that particular one). I would take the Domperidone up to 3 times a day and the Ondansetron 2 times a day 12 hours apart. I never waited until I felt sick. I was told to take them regardless and this actually worked and I didn’t feel sick or nauseous at all. Both of these I was told to take for at least 3 days after chemo. The Domperidone I could then continue to take as and when needed. Obviously this was what my prescription was. You would need to check what you would have.
If you continue to still feel sick or nauseous then speak with your chemo nurses or oncologist as this is something that can be sorted maybe with a change of meds.

as i was told take them before you feel sick otherwise you wont catch up, if the one they have given you is making you drowsy ask if they can give you something else, mine is just to empty the stomach as it was explained to me so shouldn't make you drowsy.
i would ask the nurse if it is having the side effect or if the drowseyness is more chemo related
