Annual review

I’m due to have an annual check up with blood tests for tumor markers. I’m feeling nervous. I had a stage 1 hormone receptive breast cancer that was stage 0 for spreading as far as they could tell. As it was a grade 3 tumour I had chemotherapy and radiotherapy following surgery as it might have spread on a micro level.

  • Hi

Once treatment is over I can imagine that the reviews and check ups feel huge and of course that will bring nervousness. I hope that your check up brings quick results so you know where you are.

  • Hi

I do hope for a negative on your annual check up.  I've now been through 5 of them and have been signed off totally in June this year- back to 'a normal person' 3 year mammograms.

I can recall my first annual, I was 100% sure that it would be back  - the fear of it returning is just horrendous isn't it?  I was SO shocked when she told me it was good news and I could book my holiday (back then, they could tell you - now they aren't allowed to do so, you have to wait for your letter in the post).

One thing I kept telling myself was that (a) they cut it out (b) radiotherapy clears up any stray cells - but for you as you had chemo as well you had a (c) chemo to give you even MORE of a belts and braces protection.

Whilst waiting for your results, do try and remind yourself of these 3 things that has been done to prevent any spread.

Do let us know how you get on won't you?

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • Thank you. Will let you know.

  • Hi Lesley,

I got my blood test results today and they were all clear so it's looking good.

  • I had mastectomy with implant July 2021, chemo, radiotherapy and then phesgo injections. I was discharged from oncology before I’d finished all the phesgo and don’t have any follow ups apart from yearly mammogram on the remaining breast. I feel I should have a check up with the surgeon to check the implant as I don’t know what is and is not normal!

  • It’s worrying isn’t it? I didn’t know what to expect either. Can you discuss it with your GP and get referred just for reassurance?
