Portacath insertion

Hi all,

I had my portacath inserted a few hours ago and I was wondering what to expect over the next 24 - 48 hours. It wasn't the most pleasant of procedures and my neck feels really weird. Sorry for the stupid question, but does the plastic tube they inserted go up a vein in my neck or they just used the incision in my neck to place it and guide it down? Sorry, I really sound uneducated...

  • Hi the tube in your neck goes directly into your jugular then it floats down onto the big vein that goes into your heart (it isn’t in the heart it is 2cm above it)

    you will

feel bruised for 48hrs so take paracetamol/ibuprofen and apply heat to the back of the neck. Over days your body will become accustomed to it.

  • Yes it does. They will have made a small incision in your neck to insert the wire, and then a bigger one in your upper chest or arm for the port itself. It will settle quickly. I have had mine for 16 months and don’t notice it unless I catch sight of it in the mirror.

  • Thank you, Coddfish! Sounds very reassuring! I hope I'll get used to it soon!

  • The first few days I had a bit of discomfort around the site and on my neck but it does settle.  It's a more invasive procedure than I'd bargained for to be honest.  Turning over in bed the first night was hard.

For a while I could swear I felt the tube in my jugular (it felt stiff and "clicky" when I moved my head sideways).

I had mine done 31/5 and really don't notice it now, apart from when it's used.

  • Thank you for your reply, MrsP2003! My thoughts exactly about the procedure! My neck is pretty painful and I really hope it will get better soon. I however always think the worst and am scared of complications... The best of luck with your treatment!
