Hi All, I'm newly diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Just checking if it is ok to take Vitamin D for bone health whilst taking tamoxifen , if so what dose ? And is  Vitamin D supplement ok with Breast Cancer in general . Thank you xx (p.s I had a hip replacement in December due to Oeasteporois Arthritis in my hip.

  • Hi Fizzler, sorry to hear of your diagnosis. When I was having chemo my Vitamin D levels were low. My oncologist recommended taking Vitamin D supplement to help. I have continued this throughout chemo, radiotherapy, target treatment and tamoxifen and have been fine. I admit I haven’t checked with him since I have been on tamoxifen but I would have imagined he would have asked me to stop if it wasn’t suitable. I will double check with him when I see him in a weeks time. I have been taking D1000 vitamin d oral spray.
Might be worth double checking with your breast care nurse just to make sure or maybe the Macmillan nurses will be able to advise.

Pic below of the one I take, tastes nice too it’s the peppermint flavour one.

    Wishing you all the best.

    • Hi I as part of my post chemo cancer treatment have been prescribed a strong vit D supplement as a help towards counteracting calcium loss due to the aromatase inhibitor, exemestane I am on. So ask ask your GP to prescribe. Also people on here have recommended 10 prunes a day.x
  • Me too. I take one tablet twice a day to stop calcium lost while on anastrazole . I will also be having zolodex injections

  • Hi There, thank you for the response. Let me know once you have seen your Consultant. I will ask my breast care nurse snd 'the spray' great idea xx Liane

  • Thank you. Prunes fab idea xx

  • Yes it is ok to take Vitamin D supplemant. I take a high dose Vitamin D/calcium tablet on prescription.

  • My hubby has osteoporosis and takes his prunes everyday.  I am on anastrazole with good bones but don’t want that to change so prunes are on my menu too.  Good for regularity too!!  Take care.

  • I read a study showing that the vast majority of women with breast cancer are vitamin D deficient at diagnosis. I was told to take 3000-5000iU per day. I check with my oncologist to check that what I am taking is ok for me. My vit D levels were measured on a blood test. Check with your oncologist to find out what’s right for you

  • Hi

i take a vitamin D and K2 supplement in a spray , my oncologist had suggested it . I am on letrozole

I think vitamin D and BC are linked , ie we tend to have low levels ( according to my onco ) check with your oncologist re dose for you  but it’s likely to be ok generally xx
