Seroma on chest

Hello,

I am 5 weeks post mastectomy/diep/SLNB and still have a large seroma on my upper chest above diep boob as well as one in my armpit. The latter does not bother me much but the one on my chest is tender and just not reducing. The ultrasonographer offered to drain it but said I could also wait. I chose to wait as I am having chemo and understand draining can introduce infection plus the seroma can just refill.

I guess I am looking for experiences of chest setomas, how long it took to go away, how to help it reabsorb, etc. So far, I have seen no signs of reduction in size. It looks like a wierd deformity on my chest, even if I can kind of hide it with loosely fitting clothing. Tight T- shirts really make it stand out.

  • Hi - I’m one week since my mx with auxiliary removal and I’m developing what looks like another boob but to the side near the armpit - might look into trying some reflexology if it start reducing in size. I hope your body starts to behave and reduce the seroma x

  • Hi, I have had two mastectomies, and with both I developed a large seroma. The first one included an axillary clearance and I had a drain for five days that was constantly filling. It was painful, so they drained it. 900ml came out the first time. I had it drained 3 times because radiotherapy was imminent. The third time it was drained by a registrar, with a nurse in attendance. She definitely knew what she was doing. She gently massaged  several areas, draining from each one. She said that some areas were healing and where it wasn’t this was leaving pockets that were filling up. It didn’t look like that though, it looked  like the whole area was affected, so she must have felt it. She took ages, and was very patient and meticulous. That evening I could tell that it felt different, and was cautiously optimistic. It didn’t fill again and I never got an infection. The second mastectomy did not involve an axillary clearance and was done a year after my first mastectomy. This was for symmetry. No drain was used. The seroma developed about 10 days post surgery. I had it drained once (about 500ml), and then it refilled. But because I wasn’t having radio, I decided to see what would happen. At first, pretty much nothing, but then it started to lessen. A couple of weeks later it had gone.

  • Hi I stil have a small seroma and I am over 12 weeks post surgery .It feels a bit tight had it drained once hopefully it will go . Don't worry I am sure it will get absorbed eventually
