Planned double mastectomy

Hi, I am feeling really anxious after speaking to my surgeon that after my double mastectomy and reconstruction in a few weeks that I will receive 1 night hospital stay and pain to be managed with paracetomol. Also that I need to manage my own drains as the district  nurses are unreliable, I can’t tell you how anxious I’m feeling about the lack of nursing aftercare I am expecting to receive. I am so worried that I will be in so much pain and left to deal with it with paracetomol not being effective enough. I found that after my biopsies in both breast the paracetomol was wearing off after 2 hours and I had to manage the pain for a few more hours to take more paracetomol. Surely the pain of a double mastectomy is going to be much higher? How will I know if I have an infection or whether this is a normal healing process? I don’t heal well and although I’m in pretty good health any invasive procedure I’ve had previously ended up with infection including, infected belly button after keyhole surgery, ear piecings, giving birth,. My anxiety is hitting the roof tbh as I feel I’m going to be left with high level pain and very little monitoring. Is it usual to have only 1 night in the hospital following double mastectomy and reconstruction?

  • That doesn’t sound normal to me if having reconstruction as well. I had a single mastectomy in February with DIEP reconstruction and was told I would be in for 3 nights but ended up staying in for 4 by which time I really felt well enough to go home. I actually coped ok with paracetamol which I was surprised about but I’m sure your GP could prescribe something stronger if needed. I was absolutely terrified about the drains but actually found them ok. I was told when going home I would just need to measure the amount of fluid each day and ring them and they would tell me when to go in to get emptied so I wouldn’t actually need to do anything myself. I was very fortunate in that they were they able to remove all my drains before I left hospital but it definitely wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be had I needed to go home with any drains.  I wish you all the very best with your surgery.

  • Hi I had a double mastectomy and lymph node clearance in 2021 but without reconstruction. When i saw the anaesthetist just before surgery he told me he was going to use a nerve block to help with the pain. I stayed in one night and could access morphine if needed but wasn't in too much pain. The drains are easy to manage but just get in the way. A district nurse will probably come an see you when you're discharged this is arranged by the ward nurse. I had an appointment a week later with the breast team to check everything. To help with sleeping I would recommend a v shaped pillow as it wedges you on your back and keeps you still.  You haven't mentioned what type of reconstruction you're having, if it's a DIEP you should be staying in 3-4 nights. Have you been assigned a breast nurse? If you have please relay all your worries to them as that is what they are there for! Good luck and I hope all goes well.

  • Hi..,thank you for your advice . I’m unsure what type of reconstruction I am having other than it being implants and completed same time as my mastectomy .

  • Hi I believe you are likely to have much less complications with implants and recovery will be quicker. You will recover better at home and more likely to get more sleep!!
