In October 21 I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer estrogen receptor positive with one lymp node affected .
After having a lumpectomy I was found to have cancer in the borders and went on to have my right breast removed in January 22 . Not long after and still feeling positive and quite well I was asked if I'd like to be part of a study to find which patients would benefit from chemotherapy and which wouldnt. I agreed only too happy to assist research of any kind . A sample of my tumor was sent to America when the results returned I was delighted to be told that my chance of cancer returning was 15 percent over nine years . Consequently chemotherapy wouldn't benefit me and might actually cause unnecessary suffering. Never one to use a sledgehammer to crack a nut me and my oncologist moved on accordingly and I had radiotherapy which I coped with rather well despite being 66 years of age . You've probably guessed where this is heading ? Yep the test was wrong, I'm now stage 4 secondary cancer in the bones I have it in 6 different places . Only in February of this year I was told my mammogram was clear, something didn't feel right i knew it was back despite being told the discomfort was down to lympodema. This month i underwent a bone scan then a CT scan . My intuition was correct
My reason for posting this is to warn others that might be baseing thier treatment on this test . Please don't let this be your only deciding factor Chemo might have saved me , it might not .
I'm not looking to place blame anywhere just to bring people's attention to it. I will be contacting the trial organisers personally to be certain that they have the full facts .
And what was your result if you don't mind me asking
I too didn't know this was a trial! I had lumpectomy November 22 came back clear margins no lymph nodes grade 3 so oncotype test recommended. However it was approved by nice as early as 2018 so I don't think it was - https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/dg34/chapter/1-recommendations.
I had a score of 29 so really chemo was a no brainer to us. If it had been lower I would have thought about it but all the reading I did showed anything between 15 and 30 was discussion to be had and over 30 definite chemo. So 29 to me was near enough.
Best wishes
Libby
It's hard to know what to make if this in a way, sorry Lemon blossom. My risk is 11% in 9 yrs, but I presume that means of 100 women 11 with get a return in cancer over 9 yrs. The Oncologist also finished by saying they can't guarantee that a different cancer won't come back. I just want to enjoy this summer. My op was in Dec last year, radiotherapy Feb. It's gutting to read that. I can't imagine how you feel.
Thank you Sabrina and everyone else that replied . Truth is I had a feeling from the very beginning that this would return , but not within two years. Now im over the shock I cope well most days. I concentrate on what I Can do , what's still possible, I have four grown up children and six grandchildren they're taking me to Tenerife in August for a family holiday . My life has been full happy and entertaining and will continue to be for some time. I avoid negativity and well meaning people that tell me to drink spinach smoothies and try coffee enema's !!
I wont be taking anything that interferes with the quality of my life, pain relief and radiotherapy to shrink the tumours where possible yes please, Complementary therapies like massage and supplements why not . Like you Sabrina, I'm very pragmatic I want to live what's left of my life not just exist.
Just for clarification I should say that my trial was for people with estrogen receptor positive early breast cancer with 1 to 3 lymp nodes involved . I have no idea if the Oncotype looks at other types or if there is in fact a different test .
I agree with you. I had the test done on that basis too. I just do what I want to do everyday. I am spiritual, I believe in Angels. I do Kyle Gray's courses. My son is Autistic and Epileptic. I am doing my best to sort him out. You have a lot if love around you. I have family and friends. Support even through these words here. Thank you for sharing your story. Xxx
Hello Lemonblossom, I am sorry to hear that you have metastatic disease now. I had early stage 1 breast cancer in left breast and DCIS in the right. Both 100% estrogen and progesterone positive. So 2 lumpectomies and radiation for that and started in Anastrazole for 5 years. Although my risk of recurrence is small I know it is there as ER positive cancers not only can recur early they can recur 20 years later.
The treatments for metastatic disease is improving and that is encouraging too. Have you heard of the Signatera test which can check for distant metastatic breast cancer? It is not only used to check for that but can also monitor treatments for metastasis. Here is the link and I wish you all the best during treatment.
