You couldn't make this up.
Yesterday was meant to be my surgery day (Mastectomy, SLNB and pap flap reconstruction). I woke up with a slightly tickly throat. I took a covid test and it was positive. My first time too.
I haven't heard back from my care team or my nurse. Any idea quickly you can have surgery after covid?
I have a feeling it's at least 3-4 week wait for a new slot with my surgeon and I presume as I'm not on any other treatments (chemo, etc) I won't qualify for any anti-virals.
Does anyone have any experience of this?
Hi Jackie P
Sorry to hear that your surgery had to be cancelled because you got Covid. I think that you will have at least a four week wait until they can reschedule the operation. It's a right pain to have that happen as you've geared yourself up to have the operation.
I had a procedure cancelled on me during the week because I'm waiting on an angiogram and the anaesthetist refused to let the operation go ahead until it's done so I know how you feel.
Hopefully you won't be too sick with Covid.
Best of luck with your op when you eventually have it.
Best wishes

Hello, oh I hope you feel ok. Do you think you can get an anti viral kind of like a preventative measure as you are due to have operation? Here in US easy to get. Not strict about it.
I do understand about surgery canceling as it happened twice but it was not because of my health. My surgeon had a family emergency and then a few weeks later I was scheduled with his partner and he got sick and was out of work for 2 weeks. I often thought he may have had Covid.
Take it easy and hugs to you to feel better.

Hi Jackie P, have you contacted 111? They should be able to help. I would think you can get anti virals as you have a cancer diagnosis and would be classed as vulnerable. I got covid a little while back, my first time too and it was 2 days after my last chemo. At the time one was still able to register a positive test and the “covid dr” as he called himself gave me a call the following day. Very helpful asked lots of questions and then did a prescription and anti vitals were delivered. I think this has changed or is due to change shortly and although you register on the website they don’t contact you now, you have to call them. I would try and see if you can speak to someone. I found although I wasn’t bad with covid I don’t know if it was the anti virals or because I had been up to date with vaccinations that helped. It did take me 11 days from when I tested positive to be negative. My father in law had antivirals and he tested negative in a much quicker time.
Wishing you all the best and hope that the covid goes quickly so you can continue with your op.

Hi cuffcake2000 Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did contact 111 but unfortunately, as I'm not immunocompromised, I don't meet the criteria. For me, surgery was my first treatment.
Interestingly, I would have qualified if I had tested positive within three months of having the same surgery. I'm trying to see if I can get lucky on the Panoramic Study trial instead, though probably a long shot.
Sadly here in the UK is only available to a select amount of people and they are very strict about it here. I tried but a GP told me it's unlikely because I'm not immunocompromised.
