Currently undergoing chemo for er/pr negative, HER2+ breast cancer, c6cm, Grade 3, lymph nodes negative on scan. 6 of total 8 chemo cycles completed. Diagnosed in Jan this year at 45 years old.
Family history of breast cancer and have had LCIS when 36 years old so at +20% increased risk of developing breast cancer in either breast. Concluded would be most at peace with a double mastectomy. Breast surgeon referred me to a psychiatrist who has signed off on this.
Have consulted with plastic surgeon and discussed DIEP flap reconstructions. Don't currently have enough on tummy to make this possible for both sides. Also, oncologist has said that if I had an immediate reconstruction, would need 15 fractions of radiotherapy post surgery but if delayed reconstruction, would need 5 and with less complications for any of the reconstruction options. Keen to minimise more treatment if possible.
I think the best option for me would be the double mastectomy with a delayed implant or DIEP reconstruction (if enough 6-12 months after radiotherapy) down the line once have healed from radiotherapy.
Anyone else had a double mastectomy with delayed reconstruction implant or DIEP?
Hi MrsM45
Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. While I haven't had a double mastectomy with delayed reconstruction I noticed that you haven't had any replies yet so I thought I'd reply to you to welcome you to the community. This reply will move you to the top of the discussion. Hopefully someone will be along shortly with an answer for you.
Wishing you the best of luck with the operation.
Best wishes

Hi Mrs M45.
I had a single mastectomy nearly 18 months ago now. I opted not to have reconstruction at the time because of chemotherapy and radiotherapy like you. I am just now considering options for reconstruction as I finished treatment 8 months ago so am also keen to hear from anyone who has undergone a delayed diep procedure. Hopefully my commenting will put your thread back to the top so someone will answer.
Best Wishes
Kass
