My First Oncology Appointment

I had lobular Her2- ER+ PR+ Grade 2 20mm lumpectomy surgery in April after mammogram, ultrasound, core and punch biopsies, and MRI.

I was then prescribed Anastrozole last month, and have my first Oncology appointment week after next so two months after surgery.

Surgeon told me I would have radiotherapy.

I know treatment plans are highly personalised, but any ideas as to what should I expect at my first Oncology appointment?

(I read online of others having e.g. Oncotype tests, Dexa scans, Bisphosphonates, none of which have been mentioned yet to me, are these things that Oncology covers?)

Am trying to prepare a bit, the appointments are so precious and I don't want not to ask about something potentially relevant!

  • her 2+ is down the chemo route at the outset, I believe, if HER 2 was negative they do the oncodx test. so that would be why you didn't get that.

dexa scan is bone density, assume that will come about in appt, because this ruins bone as does getting old.

i’m booked first next week, so not totally sure either, but am sure it is more tests and courses of action, hope a little info helps

  • The oncology specialist will talk through the history of your cancer so far, then advise the next steps in treatment.

They will explain everything to you step by step about your plan and their recommendations.

You are right, treatment paths are personal and tailored to your type of cancer.

Make sure you take a list of any questions you might have,  I wrote mine down.  And if possible, take someone with you for a second set of ears.
