Hello Fellow-Fighters,
I bet I’m not the only one with this problem.
I’m on my second round of EC and for the first 10 days after a session everything tastes totally vile. water is like petrol, coffee tastes sour, even ginger beer is horrible. My sister-in-law suggested I make lemon barley water which is sometimes bearable, but I’ve not been able to find any other drinks which I can tolerate, let alone enjoy.
If you have discovered any drinks which taste okay to you during this phase, could you share it here so that those of us struggling to drink enough can try it too?
Thanks so much, cheers, Chyebren
I’ve not heard of Nix and Kix but I’ll see if I can chase some down. I’ve had to give up on coffee for the moment, hot or iced, sweetened or not, milk or black it’s all undrinkable. I’m beginning to think that totally new drinks work better because I have no expectations of how they’re going to taste. I’ve also noticed my tongue is thickly white coated, I wondering if that is causing some of my taste problems. I’ll talk to the nurses tomorrow. Many thanks for your suggestions.
I hadn’t even considered milky drinks, but I’ll try one of these today. I don’t normally like them, so,perhaps this is the time they’ll come into their own. Many thanks for the suggestions.
The white tongue could be oral thrush. If you were sent home with some corsodyl give that a go.
Oh, okay, thanks. I haven’t been given any corsodyl but I will ask about it tomorrow. I can’t find a coated tongue mentioned in any of the side effects for medications, perhaps,it’s,just another thing they don’t tell us until it happens.
If I have problems with sore mouth, thick salvia or any other issues I used a teaspoon of salt in warm water to gargle and rinsed my mouth. The salt kills any bacteria used to help soothe.
Thanks, this is a great tip for Sunday afternoon when all the pharmacies here are closed and I can’t reach my advisory nurses until tomorrow, I’ll do that now. The support on this forum is absolutely invaluable, and very much appreciated.
I found bottled water - particularly Lidl own brand worked. Couldn’t stand tap water. Sometimes a squeeze of lemon in water helps. I couldn’t stand milk, tea, coffee etc. I did like herbal teas and tried lots of flavours till I found one or two that I liked. Are cold drinks better or hot? Could you eat jelly for the liquid content or eat ice pops or lollies? Also soup is a good way of adding in liquid. I needed things to be more strongly flavoured and seasoned in order to taste them.
Hi Zephyr, These are really helpful suggestions thank you. I tried an iced lolly today and managed half of it, so I guess cold is better than hot for me at the moment. I do have filtered water, and sparkling from Lidl, but both taste vile. The lime cordial suggested by Libwithlob has helped a bit. I’m still looking for a herbal tea I can tolerate. I’ve not tried jelly, will make some the afternoon and try that, it sounds like an excellent idea. Actually soup has been the one hot “drink” I’ve managed bits of through yesterday and today. It won’t hurt me to lose a bit of weight but having just got over 24 hours of diarrhoea on Friday I’m particularly aware that I should be drinking a lot more. But with everyone’s excellent suggestions and a visit to the store tomorrow I should be back on the right track. Many thanks.
