Hair growth after cancer

I turned 30 years old recently, and in September 2022, I received a diagnosis of stage 3 breast cancer. The type of cancer I have is her 2 positive. Following the diagnosis, I underwent a lumpectomy, during which it was discovered that the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes. To combat the disease, I underwent radiation therapy and subsequently completed a three-month course of chemotherapy last month. Unfortunately, as a side effect of the treatment, I lost my hair, including my eyebrows and eyelashes.

In addition to the other treatments, I am currently undergoing endocrine therapy, which involves taking aromasin inhibitors and zoladex to suppress estrogen production. Consequently, I have entered into a state of menopause. Just last week, on May 8, 2023, I began taking amibaccilib. I have concerns about whether my hair will grow back after all these treatments. Although I can see some signs of regrowth, I am anxious about the possibility of remaining bald, especially since I am taking tamoxifen and amibaccilib simultaneously. I would appreciate any insights or experiences you can share regarding this matter.

  • Hello Kidusawit

I am sorry to read about your cancer journey so far and can understand your worries about hair regrowth. I had chemo last year and used the cooling cap however still experienced hair loss. I had some hair regrowth during chemo but I was still shedding hair a couple of months post final chemo. At about 3 months I started to notice more decent hair growth although I had to treat it gently, lots of conditioner etc. It took until 6 months to look reasonable again. It sounds like it is still early days for you. I found I lost eyebrows and eye lashes again post chemo but within a couple of weeks they started to grow back.

I have had a look at the treatments that you are having and found that they may cause some thinning but not complete hair loss, which sounds a bit more positive.

  • Hi Kidusawit, sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I have had my op and gone through 5 months worth of chemo and have started radiotherapy. I am due to start tamoxifen after I’ve finished radiotherapy. My hair started to grow back whilst I was on Docetaxel and I am now using some serums for eyebrows, eyelashes and hair. I started the eyelash serum 2 weeks ago and have noticed that there are tiny hair’s beginning to grow so fingers crossed the serum is working. I have only just bought the eyebrow and hair serums so am hoping they will help too. I got them from the below link just incase you are interested.

I’m hoping when I start tamoxifen it won’t affect what’s growing but I know everyone is different and cancer treatments affect us all differently too.

    Wishing you all the best

  • I have triple negative BC. I had iv chemo until Nov last year, then op, then radiation. I am currently on xeloda and Herceptin (her 2 found in residual). My hair is now still short and I wear a bob wig for nights out, but my natural hair looks fairly ok 6 months in after main chemo. I had my first tiny haircut last week! I got my eyebrows sorted with micro blading and they look natural. My eyelashes are now ok, but I used an eyeliner when I didn’t have any. I generally looked ok with all, well people recognised me who didn’t know about my treatment, so I must have looked fairly normal!Best of luck to you.x

  • Thank you dear for sharing your journey. It really makes me feel strong knowing that I can get my looks back. And hearing it from someone who goes through it makes it more realistic than from people who have no idea how it feels to go through the emotional rollercoaster.

  • Hello,

Similar to you my cancer was stage 3 her2 and estrogen positive.  I finished chemo mid march and am on zoladex and letrozole.  Like you I was concerned with letrozole having thinning hair listed as a side effect whether my hair would grow properly.  However its been 10 weeks this week since I finished chemo and I have a full coverage of hair growth.  It was slow to start and some hairs grew before others so some is about 6-7 mm long whilst other strands are more.like 2-3 and others just stubble..  At first I was worried that only some follicles would come back but over time I am.seeing that it is all coming back just slowly and at different rates.  Also at first my hair head started to grow back and there was no sign of my eyebrows or eyelashes and j was very worried but they have suddenly ly I  the last couple of weeks started coming through fast.  Hope it starts coming back for you soon.  X
