Hi all,

I was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Cancer in 2021 and have since had a mastectomy, chemo and radiotherapy. I have now developed a rash on the mastectomy site which the consultant today has said looks like a cancerous rash above the skin. I am due to have a biopsy in a couple of weeks but it would be good to know  if this has happened to anyone else . Thanks x

  • Hi  I am sorry you're back in this uncertain time again and hope you have some answers soon. I haven't experienced this myself, but I noticed your post hadn't had any responses yet, as the site is quite busy. My answer will bump you up to the top again and I hope someone with the relevant experience will be along soon. Best wishes

  • Hi, I’m not sure if I have relevant experience, but I’ll tell you a bit of my history. In January 2021, I got out of the bath, to see a widespread scarlet rash over my  lower breast. Fast forward to post scans and biopsy. I was diagnosed with invasive ductal cancer. They originally thought it was inflammatory cancer, but it wasn’t. So they thought the rash was due to a blocked lymph gland. Like you, I had chemo, mastectomy, and radiotherapy. They didn’t really know what the rash was, but it had not tested positive for cancer. Still, radiotherapy decided to use a bolus sheet, which is used if the skin needs to be treated. Then, I got my full pathology results. What a shock that was. Turns out that I had a mixed lobular and invasive tumour. The skin was negative. That’s all I can tell you. Sorry if this is of no help. Xx

  • Hi Cloudier,

Thanks for your reply. Has the rash cleared now and if so what cleared it? Also what is a bolus sheet?

Are you still having ongoing treatment?

    Thanks x

  • Hi, I was initially given antibiotics, and it did go subside a bit, moving downward. But it never completely went away, until I had the full mastectomy. A bolus is looks like a thick, but clear plastic sheet. The radio-oncologist decided to use it at my radiotherapy planning meeting. It’s specifically used to treat skin. She was like my surgeon … not really sure what this was, but let’s treat it as a precaution. She offered me it to me in that way, so I said, yes, ok.
I am taking Anastrazole and bisphosphonate.

  • Ps. I’ve just remembered something. If you follow Liz O’Riordan on Twitter (the breast surgeon who got lobular breast cancer) you see that about a year ago (maybe a bit more) she developed a rash and had a biopsy. It was not cancer, but some kind of allergic reaction to an injection that she had.

  • Sounds like me. They don't seem to know what it is either but I've already had the mastectomy so maybe they'll just do the radio.

I hope you're doing well after you op and everything. 5hanks for your help.

    Take care x

  • Her rash was on the mastectomy chest wall.

  • That's interesting. Thanks, I'll have a look x

  • Hi Lolly P,

Like you I had invasive lobular cancer in 2021 and mastectomy, chemo and radiotherapy. A couple of months ago I developed a rash on the mastectomy site (I'd had an immediate reconstruction at the time). I was worried that it was cancerous but to cut a long story short after several weeks of antibiotics/iv antibiotics/scans and hospital stays it was concluded it was most likely a very delayed reaction to radiotherapy. They eventually removed the breast implant and I am slowly recovering. The good news is that the biopsy came back clear, so it really was just some sort of acute inflammatory reaction. I hope this is encouraging for you x

  • Hi Lara1,

Thanks for your reply. Thats very encouraging. Ive got my biopsy results on Friday and I'm feeling a bit more hopeful now.

Really glad things are going well for you and you finally know that it's nothing to worry about. Take care x
